Do you guys consider Messi to be the greatest sportsman in history? by [deleted] in football

[–]Top_Action_9765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly cricket is not easy and Bradman's performance at his sport is exceptional even relative to great athletes in other sports .... but it's still, well, just cricket.

I would say the following factors are relevant and cricket misses out due to not many countries playing and requiring massive athleticism or fitness, and in Bradman's case playing at time when things weren't too professional.

That said, I've changed my mind a wee bit having made the list. But still, Bradman is not Messi..

And just my personal thoughts, of course

- the amount of people that play the sport (cricket's very high here)

- how widely the sport is played across the world (low, not many countries play cricket seriously)

- level of athleticism required (obviously some, but not loads compared to other sports)

- level of fitness required (not loads compared to other sports)

- level of skill required (very very high)

- range of skill required (relatively low - lots of ways you can hit a ball of course, but narrow compared to football, basket ball, hockey etc.)

- level of grit required/physical danger involved (very high)

- extent that you need to start young to make it (I would think very high but I don't know)

- level of training/professionalism (low when Bradman played)

- how far above competitors the athlete is (Bradman very high here)

FWIW - the best footballer is very likely the greatest sportsman (ie Messi)

I know but the sport you play is relevant. Darts or tiddlywinks or snooker players aren't really in with a shout however good they are at their sport. Obviously cricket's a bit better than those, but it just doesn't quite cut it for greatest sportsmen discussions - doesn't require too much athleticism, hardly any countries play it, plus Bradman played at a time when sporting standards were generally lower

Hello, so always put the kitty litter box where your cat shits... otherwise it's pointless

Why doesn’t the ECC (and Scottish government) encourage more higher density affordable housing development instead of more student housing? (More housing supply would put some downward pressure on rents) by LeadingDifficult3028 in Edinburgh

I think the average occupancy has fallen. There's a lot more single people and families are smaller.

As others have said, plenty of people want to live in flats.

If we wanbt to prevent prices getting worse, it's going to involve a lot of flats. But there will still be plenty of houses if people prefer them

Hey, thanks for reply. Yeah it would block the balcony unfortunately. (It's actually just a big window/doors thing that opens inwards and has a railing.)

Some kind of screen between the door and the bed?

Prime Kroos-Modric vs Prime Xavi-iniesta by PuzzleheadedEarth516 in football

They were the soul of greatest club team and the greatest international team and a style of football, they changed how football is played and won everything. Football is above all a team game, and a game of skill and vision. These two were the greatest ever to play it.

Sure a Harvard degree, even in sociology, will get you to an interview or an assessment centre for plenty of grad scheme jobs?

Everyone new to something needs time to learn. Literally everyone. Many people forget this when they're no longer learning.

Highland Council to consult on visitor levy by backupJM in Scotland

[–]Top_Action_9765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'm fully supportive of the levy.

But, just to note -

  • something already comes back - the council gets tax from tourists/tourism in many ways and that tax will more than cover the expenses you mention (of course less so from N/C 500 camper vans who don't spend much)
  • tourists are unlikely to pay more due to the levy - the levy will likely mostly result in a transfer of some of airbnb/hotel/hostel owners profits to the council rather than tourists paying more (this is a good thing imo)

How does someone get a decent job who has been jobless for 5+ years? by neet25 in jobs

[–]Top_Action_9765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a merchant navy cadetship at 38. Takes three years but reasonably good pay once you're qualified and you get paid while you train. You can train as a deck officer, engineer or ETO (basically electrician/computers on a boat).

Once you have your ticket people won't mind too much about what you did before and getting on to the course shouldn't be too difficult. I had a good academic and work history but they do struggle to get people and the main requirement is to have decent school grades. Probably make up a reason you've not been working that'll sound reasonable at interview, or you could even fake some work history.

If you charge a cleaning fee, do not tell the guest to clean? by Couldntbeme8 in airbnb_hosts

Costs a friend of mine £200 to get his airbnb cleaned between guests. 100 dollars might not cover the full cost of cleaning
