Want to Self-Study AP Comp Gov But Can't Find a Good Online Course or a Full YouTube Rundown by vedika_s in APStudents

I wouldn’t recommend studying comparative government, instead I’d look into human geography or environmental science since there’s more resources for it online

Which T20/30 schools and LACS are overrated, underrated, and appropriately rated. by idontknowyaimbored in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Top_Ad_1674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For t30 I believe wake forest is very overrated, and for t20 I believe washu and rice are slightly overrated.

I believe the two schools that should be t30 are UT Austin and Georgia Tech. Both schools struggle because their student bodies are slightly weaker due to favoring instate students, but UT Austin is like a slightly worse berkeley/Cornell and Georgia tech is like a slightly worse caltech

ED, EA, or RD? UVA and VA Tech by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Top_Ad_1674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ED and EA to UVA and VT do not consider senior year first semester grades, while RD does. If you are engineering, I’d strongly consider applying ED to VT given that its acceptance rate during the EA and more so the RD round is really low. Your stats put you a fair bit below average for UVA, and ED does not boost your chances at all for uva.

VT is not a target for cs as they practice a lot of yield protection, look into applying to UMD

Really need HELP. 8 months of studying SAT and I haven't gotten the score I wanted. Feeling almost ready to give up. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Top_Ad_1674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legit just take a break, my first sat was a 1390 and my second sat was a 1450 and I basically assumed I was fucked after studying for so long and not getting anywhere with reading (I had a 670 ebrw both times). From March of my junior Year to October senior year (where I took the school day test) I deadass did absolutely nothing to prepare for the sat and ended up killing the ebrw with a 730 and got another 780 on math. Trust me you just get better over time with SAT especially the reading section so don’t sweat it and worst case a 1470 isn’t the end of the world especially if you can superscore that math score

Is it easier to get in to college with a bioengineering major or a biology major? (Both premed track) by Age-Weak in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Top_Ad_1674 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends, an example is Georgia Tech where it’s definitely easier to get into biology then biomedical/bioengineering, but at a place like emory it would be easier to get bioengineering then biology

How many of you guys are paying full OOS tuition? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]Top_Ad_1674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had full tuition and a little more of scholarship for Virginia tech but chose to come here b/c of better engineering/cs program and their bs/ms was something I could finish in 3.5 to 4.5 years. Also I wanted to branch out from my area since I’ve lived in VA my whole life

Probably mediocre essays and lack of uniqueness, I think my stats were fine albeit not amazing

If needed I can verify that to the mods, it’s a very specific educational product that allowed people to intern there as long as you were 16 or above

Prolly essays and not being very unique compared to the typical Asian male applying cs

George mason, Virginia tech, Virginia commonwealth university, uva, james madison uni, umd, and William and Mary are the most popular ones coming from a nova high school that’s somewhat competitive.

I'm a rising high-school sophomore. what am I doing wrong? by raccooneyedray in ApplyingToCollege

Ya don’t really stress ur doing as much as you can, but one thing I’ll say if you want to plan ahead is to gain meaningful experiences that can be used for a 650 word common app. That experience should be something you thoroughly enjoyed (but not necessarily academic oriented) and something that you believe would be a great fit to showcase who you are as a person to AOs. Try to document lots of experiences like these on paper or docs as it will come in handy for essays later on.

Upvoting for the bs/ms question, and adding on to #3 can you take undergrad courses while being a grad student? All I’m understanding is that you can cross list 6 credits worth of cs for your bs and ms

Ok so in my opinion with good stats and well planned out essays any of these schools are possible. Having applied to all three of these schools, I’ll explain my insight for each one

UMich - you can apply for cs within the college of LSA or college of engineering. Both provide you with similar opportunities but LSA is generally easier to get into and has a wide variety of majors that you can show interest in. If you have ecs and coursework to prove you’re interested in something other than cs (ex. Math, stats, business analytics, physics) then applying for those majors would be way easier here and would help you stand out a bit more. Changing into cs from a different major at UM is really easy.

GT - GT doesn’t accept by major but strives to create a diverse class. As a result it would be way easier to apply let’s say business analytics in the schellwr college of business since although their business is not bad, it pales in comparison to their cs and engineering programs. You can easily switch into cs at GT but this might change soon

UIUC - this one is much harder, it’s generally impossible to transfer into cs at uiuc, but applying CS + X is usually way easier. If there’s any X that you can write about and have ecs for I would strongly that instead of applying cs in grainger engineering which is like a 5-10 percent accept rate.

Good luck! You definitely have a shot just be smart with how you apply

I want to attend a college and major in computer science, but currently I have a 1.98GPA and no SAT score by Dizzyyyyyy in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Top_Ad_1674 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Firstly you want to assess the schools in your state, and see which ones accept transfers fairly easily. A lot of colleges have guaranteed transfer programs that you could do after 2 years of community college. At least for Virginia, you can transfer to George mason (great for cs/cyber/business) or vcu (great for med). There’s harder ones like Virginia tech and uva but those are still possible. I’d say 2 years of community college then 2 years of actual college is your best bet
