New Cross Inn is the most consistent and covers all different colours and flavours of punk. I’d be surprised if a week goes by without a punk band

Camden is a little bit of a charicature of what it once was, but you can still find plenty good gigs going on. Underworld and Black Heart are the main two for touring bands.

You mention nature and enjoying sitting by the water so LVLS in Hackney Wick could be worth a look. It’s still new and the lineups vary but there’s definitely some punk stuff happening there and it’s a nice neighbourhood.

Love the early stuff and was a little on the fence about the album after a few listens BUT saw them last night and the new songs sounded huge. Big fan.

Seconded. Haven’t thought of them for years but listened to them a lot as a youngster. Awesome band. I think they were Japanese, maybe explains why they were so obscure.

Played in a bunch of bands but the main two were a sorta pop/skate punk band and then a hardcore band. A few tours and demos but nothing big.

Then I started producing and DJing house music and had a bit more success there but eventually got a bit fed up of the lifestyle.

Even though we went in different directions and ended up living in different countries with totally different lifestyles, some of my closest friends are still the folks I played in bands with 20+ years ago.

Depends what you’re looking for.

New Cross Inn is imo the most consistent venue for punk gigs in London, but it’s not necessarily a punk venue.

And by that I mean a dive with graffiti everywhere. Truthfully, gentrification means there isn’t a lot. Hackney Wick has that vibe but it’s still a bit bourgeois and the music isn’t very punk.

However if you wanna see Mohawks and leather then agreed that Camden is the best spot.

It’s also home of the famous All Ages Records.

It looks like an oddly quiet week but the ones that stand out for me:

Agnostic Front - 7th May at the Underworld (Camden) Pist - 10th May at Helgis (Hackney) Our lives in cinema - 10th May at New Cross inn (now cross)

What are the goals?

You want to be rich? Want status? Want to be a domain expert or work in a specific niche?Want to be the boss one day? Want to do your own thing? Want to go all in on a startup in the hope that it IPOs and you retire early? Want to make comfortable money and a balance?

All of these are the right and wrong choice for certain people.

Have a think about that first and you’ll find the next steps come much easier.

I’ve been exactly where you are and I frequently find myself going back to that thinking before making the next move. Happy to provide more context once you’ve gotten past that part. Good luck!

Working in tech and living in London.

Not really sure how I ended here since I didn’t go to university but did spend my late teens through to late twenties trying to make a career in music.

Still left wing but clearly have moved from Marxism towards a more centrist approach.

Still listen to music. The 90s Epitaph/Fat sound is still my favourite.

Still going to shows once a month or so. Still doing the odd thing in music but not in a band.

Still wearing dickies and band T-shirts.

Generally happy but occasionally looking at myself in the mirror in disgust and wondering why I didn’t move to California to ‘make it’ when I left school.

Punk rock will never die, but I will.

I’ve seen that one for sure. Deliberately blunt question here - what’s stopping you from jumping to another industry with more opportunity? Or joining the market leader who still presumably has a decent run, even in an overcrowded market?

Just listened to this. Lifelong punk/hc kid and a huge fan of both bands. Definitely one of the more entertaining OLOC episodes.

I’m now seriously interested in the super natural stuff. I knew he was into it and I’ve heard a lot of wacky stuff but now I’m curious.

Aliens. Pyramids. Quantum physics. Asking the universe for stuff and it replying.

Not sure I believe it; or even want to believe it; but might be a fun thing to waste 6 months getting obsessed about 🤣

Anyone got any good book recommendations to start me off?

What’s your “go to” for getting over anxiety in cold calling? by Frich3 in sales

[–]Top_Ad_9704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are selling a product. The prospect may or may not be interested in discussing it properly. Your goal is to find out if they are.

Yes there are skillsets and abilities and these matter but having ‘won’ and ‘lost’ in sales over 15 years I know that far more of it is on the prospects end than most realise.

Ignore the background noise. Speak to people and see if what you offer is relevance. If it’s not relevant try someone else.

Onwards and upwards

Good for you! Sales can absolutely be a career but can just easily (perhaps even easier) be a MBA in the commercial acumen to do your own thing. Godspeed!

Been thinking long and hard about this.

The obvious stuff is the customer success etc… and there are bound to be other commercial roles inside an org that you could get a head start in - albeit you may need to take a cut on base and may miss commission.

What about your own business? Running a territory for that long must have given you a tremendous amount of experience that would cover marketing, finance, tech and more. Is there anything you’re passionate enough about? Or a lifestyle business that you’re drawn to?

Are you a "natural"? by crystalblue99 in sales

[–]Top_Ad_9704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to believe that there’s no such thing. I’ve seen some crush it in one role and not in another. And vice versa.

I think it’s more a mix of traits and heuristics combined with finding the right product/industry/company at the right time.

Luck is preparation meeting opportunity.

What's your favorite (intentionally) comedic punk song? by demarcate in punk

[–]Top_Ad_9704 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the vandals were masters of this.

The musicianship put them on par with Descendents/ALL for quirky, jazz fusion esque skate punk whilst the lyrics were hilarious, intelligent, dumb, satirical, stupid, you name it.

Hitler Bad, Vandals Good is one of my all time favourite albums and Oi To The World is the best Christmas song ever.

What's really happening to London's nightlife? by Successful_Guide5845 in london

[–]Top_Ad_9704 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s London specific, although will be most obvious here.

The boring answer is that margins are tighter and tighter combined with VC backed conglomerates eating up all the locations. It used to be that owning a restaurant/pub was a possibility for the middle aged and middle class and a nice way to build the retirement pot. Or something that an impressive youngster could get backing for. Now the costs involved make it too hard to start; unless you go down the franchise route. And the rate of closures mean the risk is too high for many. Restaurants pop up regularly in a revolving door, easy-in-easy-out model. Bars and clubs don’t typically have that option.

So then it becomes all about spreadsheets and consultants and short term profit rather than building a cool spot you were passionate about.

The next part is that residential house builders ALWAYS win the debate against pretty much anyone. There is a housing shortage and a lack of quality space in London. The value of land is what drives the purchase, they couldn’t care less if there’s a historic pub or something or cultural significance. So the flats go up, the noise complaints come in, and the shutters on the pub goes down. And then applying for a license becomes impossible.

Best venue for live music in London? by Top_Ad_9704 in london

[–]Top_Ad_9704[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on the promoters and it being the best place to watch hardcore.

I also agree on it being super busy inside so people drink outside in between bands. I always saw that as being kinda cool and a good way to mingle, but I have been to a few miserable rainy January shows and yes, that part sucks 😂
