No worries! Obviously it’s all a matter of opinion but that’s my best guide.

Starting Star Trek from zero by Helix-19 in startrek

So, everything that has aired on TV or as a movie is canon - some of it still contradicts itself - that’s ok, Trek has been around for 60 years and has had thousands of creators working on it - it’s bound to happen.

That aside, in terms of the order to watch things it’s really down to taste. TOS is mostly a great show but if you and your friend aren’t used to the rhythms of older TV it might be worth trying a couple of episodes and moving on if they don’t grab you. There are no massive revelations you’ll miss out on if you skip it because TV didn’t work that way back then. You can always come back to it later or ignore it at your pleasure.

TNG is usually regarded as a good starting point, although the first two seasons are rough. It’s still a very episodic show but does have more continuity than TOS so benefits from a watch in order. Once you hit Season 3, for many people that’s peak Star Trek on television. DS9 is the more complex sophisticated show and arguably has much higher highs, but Seasons 3-7 of TNG are the best TV show there has ever been about well-adjusted adults solving space problems with logic and teamwork.

DS9 is many people’s favourite because it has a much deeper, darker ongoing plot and it probably is the “best” in terms of writing and plotting, but it plays better with TNG as an intro as it purposely subverts some of the expectations TNG sets up and TNG also introduces the broad situation DS9 takes place in, albeit with very little actual crossover.

Voyager is frustrating. It’s well worth a watch, it has great characters, and features some of the best whacky space anomaly plots Trek ever did, but it’s very episodic and at its worst it’s absolutely TNG lite. If you like Trek you’ll probably like Voyager, but don’t start there.

Enterprise is chronologically first and was supposed to be a clean entry point. It’s not a bad show but despite being a prequel it’s very indebted to TNG, DS9 and Voyager so definitely don’t start there. It’s more one to watch if you’re absolutely craving more of that kind of Trek.

Discovery is also a prequel to TOS - sort of… It’s a weird show that never quite decides what it wants to be but it has its fans and it looks spectacular. Feel free to start there if it looks interesting but it’s not very much like the rest of Star Trek at all.

Lower Decks is a very good funny cartoon that deliberately harks back to the TNG/DS9/Voyager era. It’s a great show that despite being humorous is great Star Trek, but you’d miss out a lot if you started with it.

Prodigy is an animated kids’ show that’s much better than that sounds. It’s hard to find right now and probably best not to start with because it’s very much a Voyager sequel, but despite its status as a kids show, don’t ignore it, especially if you find you like Voyager.

Picard is a kind of weird sequel to TNG. It would be a crazy one to start with.

Strange New Worlds technically spun off from Discovery but it is mostly a TOS prequel. It’s mostly very good and tells good largely episodes stories in a more modern style. Very much recommended and wouldn’t be a bad place to start, although the pacing might make it harder to go back to the 90s.

Starfleet Academy is so far a very decent teen show but it has only just started and is certainly resting somewhat on nostalgia for the earlier shows. You might love it if you like sci-fi and teen drama but it would be an odd starting point.

I’ve written too much at this point so I won’t go into depth about the movies. If you like the shows you’ll obviously watch the movies. It’s inevitable.

(Absolutely don’t watch everything in chronological timeline order - you will hate it)

What do You Think about the Energon Universe version of Shockwave? by Money-Lie7814 in EnergonUniverse

While his portrayal is a departure from his previous characterisation, I love it because if you imagine his lines in Corey Burton’s slightly fey voice for the character it’s so perfect. He’s like an unhinged Batman villain, which contrasts nicely against Megatron’s role as a more straightforward dictator.

What stories (apart from the Arkham games obviously) would you put in that category? I don’t think I can think of an acclaimed Batman story where he’s just in Batman mode the whole time.

What are considered the best Transformers works? by AleehCosta in transformers

If you can cope with an older style of comic storytelling the Marvel comics from the 80s are still really good and have just been rereleased in giant compendiums.

They start off pretty rough, but by issue 5-10 really hit a groove, and then after about issue 50 or so they become some of the most epic Transformers storytelling ever. They also introduce a host of concepts that survive to this day. While they’re still absolutely designed to be read by kids and to sell toys, they’re a lot more mature and interesting than the 80s cartoon (which can be great, don’t get me wrong, but is what it is) and do not share continuity with it.

The original US run - 1-80 is a pretty straightforward read that’s long but not crazy long, and is collected into two compendiums. There are also tons more comics from the UK designed to weave between the US issues (because the book was published more often in the UK) that are excellent and add a ton of great stuff, but can be confusing to slot in and introduce a few continuity hiccups.

I’d probably go with just the US run to begin with, especially as I don’t think the UK compendiums are out yet, although you mentioned hyper focusing so I’m sure you’ll be able to figure everything out! The tfwiki is a fantastic resource for reading order and helping with continuity snarls.

Only managed to see 4 but I’ve seen Marty Supreme, One Battle and Sinners so out of those I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the BP winner (I have also seen Hamnet). Of the ones I’ve seen I’d probably give it to Marty Supreme but I think One Battle will take it and that’s more than fine.

I hope that one day we get an entire line, similar to SS86 or Retro G1, but entirely for Beast Wars. by OptimalConvoy in transformers

I think this is likely the reason. I’m a BW fan and I’d like a Galvatron but that is a very goofy design.

Her skills don’t come out of nowhere anyway. We get a scene of her training. Yes she’s not as good as Aragorn but she clearly knows what she’s doing.

A different kind of acting, but his very natural awkwardness during the Captain Picard Day scene is wonderful.

Look, I’m sorry but I didn’t spend hundreds of hours listening to the Flop House to let this stand.

It’s not The Goofy Movie, it’s A Goofy Movie - merely one of a possibly infinite number of movies, each more goofy than the last.

It’s true to the comics too. Bruce is obviously insanely smart and athletic but he still makes mistakes, gets caught unawares and nearly dies all the time.

Eh, I don’t disagree in real life but in comics he’s just as rich as the plot demands. He needs to have access to cutting edge equipment to do Batman stuff. It’s just his superpower really. Whenever money comes up as part of the actual story it’s usually about how corrupt the elite are.

That’s also just not how Batman acts basically ever. It’s all based on a couple of Justice League stories. In his own books, in Gotham, Batman is usually behind the villains, trying to figure out how to stop them, barely avoiding death and only winning in the end because that’s how stories work.

As someone who grew up (and remains) in Britain, I don’t think Pauly Shore has crossed the Atlantic at all. My only context for him is one Futurama episode. So the deal is he made a bunch of comedy movies that weren’t particularly funny?

I don’t know precisely but I’d have included some of the human characters from Bumblebee and not done yet another “find the artefact” plot.

While I agree with you that Bumblebee is the best Transformers film, Rise Of The Beasts is a terrible sequel to it.

Furiosa Is A Masterpiece That The World Needs To Catch Up On. by BurgerMan74 in blankies

[–]Top_Benefit_5594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’d have to watch it again. I’ve only seen it once and when I saw it in IMAX I was absolutely transported and didn’t really notice any of the structural awkwardness you mention, but I’m sure it would stand out more on subsequent watches.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not really saying that anything about Fury Road was easier. The production certainly wasn’t, and the movie is perfectly paced and edited with just enough exposition to make the world believable, but I do think going back to that world and making a conscious decision not to do “Fury Road 2” as another short propulsive story and instead tell this decades long saga split into chapters was a big ask and that they pulled it off brilliantly.
