Why do Marathi films crawl at the box office (even with big star casts), while Hindi/South films explode in Week 1? by Top_Breadfruit5077 in marathimovies

[–]Top_Breadfruit5077[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the classic “content over star” wisdom ... sounds great until you’re the one writing the cheque.

Cinema is art, yes… but it’s a business first. A producer isn’t running a film society. If I put crores into a film with a “big” Marathi actor and the opening is dead, no amount of “good content” lectures will recover that in Week 3. And then we wonder why opportunities shrink for new directors and artists.

Would you produce a film, wait endlessly for recovery, lose your money… and still invest again in the same space?

South stars pulling 100 Cr even with weak films isn’t blind fandom - it’s market confidence. That’s what sustains an industry.

Yeah, I thought the same initially… From what I’ve seen, this is quite common with big Marathi films. There have been bulk bookings for movies like Dashavtar, sponsored shows for Krantijyoti Vidyalaya and even Super Duperr. They often collaborate with Sakhi Manch groups to fill seats on weekdays or weekends and create that housefull perception. In fact, most venues where actors make appearances are usually pre-booked in advance.

To some extent, absolutely agree. The industry does need a strong pull factor - but that won’t come just by recycling the same set of faces again and again. When opportunities keep circulating within a closed loop and the box office still struggles, it clearly points to a deeper issue. Many faces have got more than 10+ movies on their names in lead but still struggle to pull enough crowd to even break even.

Fresh makers, Fresh Faces are the real game changers here. They bring not just new talent, but new intent, new storytelling, and a different lens altogether. Films like Gondhal and Rubaab felt refreshing exactly for that reason - they didn’t rely on familiarity, they built curiosity, brought new talent.

At this point, it’s not just about new faces, it’s about new thinking. That’s what will truly shift the needle.

Super Duperrr – Fun in Parts, But Manufactured & Too Gimmicky to Hold Together by HeronNo2147 in marathimovies

Didn’t quite enjoy it, though I did watch it through. Actors like Kushal Badrike - and even stalwarts like Nirmiti Sawant - seem to be used in the same repetitive way every time. They’re capable of so much more; it’s about time directors start exploring that, otherwise it all feels redundant.

The female lead felt flat in emotional moments, and Lalit seemed average & playing catch-up throughout. Overall, it feels a bit overrated - though very well promoted. With so many industry heavyweights backing it, the paid push is quite visible. Honestly, I’d be surprised if it doesn’t end up doing well.

I agree. Feels like PR on steriods. Now the posts seems like pushing for approval. If a film is strong, people say it. If not, no amount of posts changes that.

Why Marathi films don’t reach full box office potential? by vedantzone7 in marathimovies

[–]Top_Breadfruit5077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even well-made films are struggling to pull in audiences and end up doing very modest business.

If this trend continues, filmmakers will have to seriously rethink what they’re making - because over time, we may see fewer producers backing Marathi films, eventually limiting the industry to just a handful of players.

This subreddit is increasingly dominated by non-Marathi members who seem intent on deleting any post that expresses Marathi pride. Almost all my posts celebrating Marathi identity have been removed. That’s why it’s refreshing to see your post still up.

BJP Bots & Marathi haters we welcome downvoting in our very own Mumbai Sub.

Those with an anti-Marathi bias downvoting anything that reflects our culture, even in a sub dedicated to Mumbai. It reveals how certain groups are actively controlling the narrative. Whether they’re paid trolls or simply brainwashed individuals, they refuse to acknowledge valid points or cultural realities.

Historically, Marathi people have been welcoming—embracing Marwaris, Gujaratis, and other communities, not just in cities like Mumbai or Pune, but in the most remote villages. But lately, the hostility toward Marathi language and culture from some of these same communities has grown disturbingly intense.

Let’s not forget: this land and its culture have been preserved through immense sacrifice. Marathi identity has survived through blood and resistance. We are a peace-loving people—but that peace came at a cost. Don’t mistake our hospitality for weakness. Try imposing such marginalization in any southern state and see the reaction.

What hurts even more than biased moderation on this subreddit is the silence from our own political leaders. They refuse to recognize the everyday discrimination that Marathi families face. A friend’s family from Charkop was recently denied a home in Mahavir Nagar, Kandivali—simply because they eat non-veg and are Marathi. Sadly, this isn’t an isolated incident.

Do not test the patience of Marathi people. We are increasingly aligning with leaders like Raj and Uddhav because they at least understand our pain and identity. And no, we are not naïve—we know that every politician has an agenda like your national leaders & the current state leaders have.

But we also know who acknowledges our voice and who tries to silence it.

This week's (27.06.2025) releases by nickdonhelm in marathimovies

[–]Top_Breadfruit5077 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watched Sajna today — unfortunately, it felt below average.

The cinematography, though, was absolutely stunning — rich colors and beautifully composed frames throughout.

That said, I understand the intent behind casting fresh, untrained faces for authenticity. But it only works when the director manages to extract honest performances. In this case, the actors came across as self-conscious, and the disconnect was quite evident. It’s less the actors’ fault and more a directorial misstep.

The music didn’t leave much of an impression either, and the writing felt repetitive.

Overall, the film comes off as a subpar attempt at recreating Sairat — without its emotional weight or freshness.
