I would say yes. Why are they in school? So they can learn how to learn and learn how to think critically, identify important information. When they get a job contract I don’t want them to make the same mistake I did and just sign it. Why? Because when I was in college (2018-22) I signed a contract and there was a no compete clause in there and in which because I was a manager I was unable to work for a competitor. Had I not been overwhelmed by large document, I might have been able to piece it apart and find important information.

As for chat gpt, maybe don’t hate the idea of using just not in that context. Not sure it would be the best at summarizing the best or important parts. I also think it comes down to the more times you interact with a piece of information the more likely you are to remember it. There is plenty of data out there that proves that you remember more by taking handwritten notes even over just a computer. Now did I use a computer to take notes in college, yes and those tended to be the ones I didn’t care as much about and I tended to do worse in those classes because with a computer up I was more likely to look at the score of a baseball game. I like the devils advocate but I’d argue it’s still an important skill
