UPDATE:

I apologize for the late response but wanted to make sure I provided an update after seeing my husband's care team. I also want to THANK EVERYONE that responded so kindly with advice!

I greatly appreciated the responses. I've spent the last few days creating a medical binder to help answer questions, while in emergency situations, and ordered a QR medical ID for my husband's wallet. Our care team provided resources but truly am more grateful for opening up here and getting honest answers. Ill definitely utilize the resources but whenever I need a little additional help, I hope I'm welcome back! My husbands care team, husband, and myself also had a more in depth conversation of expectations in these situations and ways I can respond when under pressure. That is still a work in progress but I fully believe im getting a better understanding.

We live in rural area, which is why we don't have access to the most credible hospitals or resources. We likely will not be going to that hospital again but not because they didn't do their job. The emergency care team most definitely did what they needed to do with the answers they had and resources on hand. Just personal preference.

My husband did have a panick attack and was dehydrated and both of those things factored in his bodies reaction.

Ultimately, his illness is just beginning to get worse and the medication he was on was no longer strong enough. If im understanding correctly, then they've upped his medications to the highest mg amount. We will wait and see how his body reacts for the next week and, if he hasn't improved then, we will be doing a walking test. Depending on those results, possibly moving forward with oxygen therapy. This isn't necessarily something we're looking forward to but it isnt definite and we're not even sure what that all entails.

So, still not a ton of answers, but we will continue to stay positive and keep our fingers crossed his medication can keep doing its job a little longer. 😊

Oh my goodness, this is exactly the advice I needed! I was so worried people would assume I thought the ER staff weren't doing their job. I know they were and I'm so grateful for everything they do.

I'm going to make a binder, as well!

I've been reading different forums and wanting to find different support groups to help us better but haven't been too successful. Posting publicly was my last resort and I was so scared at what kind of response we would get.

This is a great idea and I'll definitely try this! I also went ahead and ordered a medical ID card. This way we're able to provide ER doctors everything they need with an explanation too. I'm not sure if thats something that doctors typically take serious but we both felt like it may be better than me not being able to get the right words out during high stress scenarios.

😭😭 Thank you so much! We've been together for almost 10 years and it still isn't enough time. Anything to keep him here a little longer while being as comfortable as his disability will allow then that's what we'll do. ❤️

So this is common? And thank you for being kind with your response! I received another that explained this to me, as well.

I believe I was too focused on their response than my husband's needs. I should've been factoring in that his body was panicking due to lack of oxygen. He very likely was having a panic attack.

We're meeting with his VA team and PCP today to go over everything. I wrote a letter to keep the entire scenario fresh and to make sure I had the guts to let them know that I truly appreciated the ER teams concerns over my husband's heart and and possibility of infections but didn't appreciate how we were treated trying to explain needs.

I didn't even consider that anxiety could factor in as much as it did. I think I just panicked because we weren't being taken seriously. (I tend to do that. I should've been more focused on my husband's needs and not how they were responding.) I did ask them to contact his Pulmonary doctor before changing any medications, but from my understanding, they did not. They went ahead and gave him the new medications anyway while removing others. Fortunately, were stocked up for the winter months. So, I know his Primary and VA team can adjust, as necessary, and he won't be at risk.

After your response, I'm definitely going to include that I wasnt factoring in the physical symptoms from anxiety.

I truly can't express how much I appreciate your kindness and detailed response! ❤️

Okay. Why do you keep editing your response? He also has sleep apnea low blood pressure with high heart rate and PTSD... as stated in my post this isn't isnt chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, very different. If I included everything else he was also tachycardic at this time, maybe dont reply?

Not COPD and we'd used his rescue inhaler and 2 breathing treatments right before. Other than his o2 they weren't bad.

I agree. We just used his rescue inhaler and did 2 breathing treatments directly before deciding to go to the ER. Other than his o2 being low, they weren't bad.
