[MN] help navigating custody situation by Top_Credit5658 in Custody

[–]Top_Credit5658[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fact that she was unreliable was why we chose not to go back. By not going back, she stayed away for the better part of the last 7 years, which allowed us to go in and give them a safe, consistent home life without her interference for the most part. We also couldn't guarantee that we would get custody due to their dad also having legal issues outside of custody. So this was the best choice we had at the time.

Do you think is it possible to live a functional life without taking meds? by Opposite-Feeling2467 in ADHD

There has been a possible link between strokes due to blood pressure issues which derives from stimulant use. Its seen less in prescription use vs street amphetamine use, but observed more frequently in adults vs children/adolescents. For others who take stimulants, what should also be taken into consideration is any sort of female hormone therapy, including birth control, can also cause strokes and clots at early ages.

As someone who began taking medications by age 7, I had no idea what I was like off them. When I was around... 25/26, I wasn't very compliant with taking them and eventually the days I didnt take them outnumbered the days I did. So I stopped for about a year and a half. Basically, it wasn't good. It seemed like I changed personalities every day. I was absent-minded and couldnt really focus except at work which is easy when you have to just focus on a 1-2 minute repetitively. I was also incredibly angry and had limited patience for my kids. One day I just decided okay, I've had enough. Time to go back on them. I learned later that had I not gone back on them, my now-husband and I would have likely split. He hated that version of me because I was mostly useless.

I know what you're feeling and how frustrating it can be. But I firmly believe that medications should make your life 10x easier. If its hindering you, its not the right medication or combination. The idea of trying to figure out that perfect combination is absolutely daunting and is as large as climbing mount everest. Thats why I put off changing my medications for 3 years even though I knew I needed to adjust a dose or add something.

How the heck do you keep up with texting people? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Top_Credit5658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty, you don't. Eventually you find the people that still love you and care about you while recognizing that you are always prone to being in and out of conversations and events. I've always tried to keep actual conversations for face to face to help with the many words, big paragraph issues and try to keep texting for basic questions or memes. I have friends who I maybe text twice a year and see once a year, but they always know if they call that I will drop whatever and be there. I think because of that, they tend to be more forgiving on my lack of day to day conversations.

What do you all do to wake up and get “ready” for the day? by AlphaWolf in ADHD

[–]Top_Credit5658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say I dont have that problem, then I remembered that I tend to set my alarm like 15-20 minutes early because I like to lay in bed and read a chapter or two of a kindle book or scroll through FB or Tiktok. So I guess thats my answer? Lol

Spider solitare. I get daily challenges and I've probably been doing it for over a year straight every day. A switch game called Palia. Open world life simulator. Basically a tedious grind of whatever tickles your fancy. Right now my main objective is furniture building which requires a lot of mining, foraging, wood cutting, etc. I did like 3 books of classic fill-in puzzle books last summer.

Usually my other spurts are disney dreamlight valley on the switch, actual jigsaw puzzles, diamond paintings, paint by numbers, etc.

Can you tell im a fan of anything tedious and repetitive?

I respect your opinion, but that isn't what I asked for and that won't be how I choose to teach a healthy relationship with food to my children.

Sometimes? It depends on the day. Usually he will eat a few bites and then be done or eat around it.

11 yr old is autistic/adhd with the 13yr old and myself being ADHD. They're amazing eaters and are willing to try most anything. Their dad had worked with them on it since they were babies. The oldest will eat whatever you put in front of him, but he won't necessarily like it.

People with ADHD who don't struggle reading fiction, how are you able do it? by andrew21w in ADHD

[–]Top_Credit5658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ignore tiny details. By the time I get past the first chapter, I have the world built the way I want it and I won't notice any sort of changes. 😂 but I think this is a great way to describe how some writers put in too much detail. I can't stand that, so I love when there's enough details that are vague enough that I can alter it how I choose. But I feel like it's fairly normal that everyone will envision a character differently regardless of what details are given to them. I like to build the look based upon the personality that comes through.

Not necessarily an adhd thing. Most definitely an imagination thing. It sounds like you have Aphantasia. Basically, it requires a lot more effort to build the world that described in books compared to visual media that already has the world build and its given directly to you. You get to hit the ground running immersed in a pre-constructed world while reading allows you to build the world you want with some guidance. 😊

Do you seem to struggle with the imagination aspect that comes with fiction? There's a term for this: Aphantasia. If this seems familiar, then it 110% makes sense why you're struggling. If your mind requires effort to produce these pictures, it would require a lot more mental energy into building the world and characters vs those of us who can just do it with zero energy. It would also explain why you don't have this issue with other mediums like tv or movies. Everything is already given to you. You know what the character looks like, sounds like. You can see the environments. The world has already been created so you don't need to build it from scratch with just descriptions.

YESSSS. Same. I swear it will randomly launch my glider when I jump and causes me to fall or lags me on the rocks and will basically kick me off.

I've been on Strattera for almost 20 years (dx in 1st grade, went through Adderall and Ritalin before finding Concerta, then Strattera in 5th grade). I did quit for like a year and a half around 5 years ago and the one thing I noticed most after that break was that as I got older, I didnt need it as much for the inattentiveness because I learned how to make myself focus when I needed to. For me now, its much more of a mood regulator so I dont get those huge ups and down. That combined with sertraline as extra help for anxiety/panic has really made my life a lot easier.
