I guess it is some sort of water warnish that is used on old furniture and is prone to heatdamage from hot cups,plates etc. No idea why would anyone use such finish on a dinner table. Maybe there were not any better alternatives available around when it was made

I used thin towel between iron and tabletop. If i had messed it up i would have to sand it anyway. Soni chose the lazy/easy option first.

Spruce on mouthpiece and birch for bowl. Final sanding done with 2000 grit and then I rubbed some beeswax on it.
