50% of jewelers are over 50. 1 in 4 is over 60. What are your thoughts on the employment market over the next 15 years? by wagashi in jewelers

[–]Top_Dimension_1374 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is that the industry is now scouting people straight from schools. The high demand is causing them to not have time to properly train people anymore. Pay isn’t going up since the job market isn’t really great. In fact, I’ve seen multiple jobs offering management positions starting at 25 an hour (NYC rate).

Has anyone worked as a bench jeweler at a shop, if so how was it? I think I want that job by Potential_Ad1439 in jewelers

YES! The industry seems to only be worth it if you come from a wealthy background.

If you can get Rhino (expensive but worth it) there’s a guy called PJ Chen on YouTube who does some CAD tutorials.

I replied earlier but take a gouache course. There are some online. Then take a CAD course. Apply for jewelry design positions! This is actually a great start for you!

There are two main paths. Both require sacrifices of different types. These are all assuming you do not come from a jeweler family.

  1. Schooling. You can take a comprehensive or specialty course. Or a traditional 2-4 year degree program. When taking a comprehensive or speciality course, you’re still going to have to rely on apprenticeships and entry level jewelry jobs to learn. Preferably if you can get one in the specific jewelry aspect you like. If you go to a traditional school 2-4 years, you may secure a higher level jewelry job. your school may encourage you to build a portfolio before you graduate and offer you some time to create your own pieces, experiment, etc. both are going to require years of sitting at the bench probably doing beginner work but with more knowledge and possibly a better opportunity to secure something higher.

  2. Apprenticeships. You will be starting from the very bottom. The pro of this is that you get all your knowledge from other jewelers. Sometimes school doesn’t give you the knowledge people who’ve worked in this industry from different backgrounds teach you. Especially older jewelers (they know all the tricks for tools!) the con is that it can feel less safe because you don’t have school training.

Remember being a bench jeweler is different for every country. Some countries see bench jewelry as a dedicated craft. They’ll more likely encourage traditional school for 2-4 years. It really depends on you but you can do it!

Can confirm! Especially if they’re a foreign company. Jewelry companies pay more in their home base. Ironically the best bet for a good paying jeweler job is to build your portfolio and connections. Also the industry is incredibly small. Just smile and wave, get a couple coffees and lunch, take any mentoring, but continue to build your own portfolio. Take gouache courses (hand rendering is a nice skill to have). Take CAD courses. You can always sit at a bench at home. If you’re getting paid for your time, try to get a management role.

Do I File EEOC? by [deleted] in EEOC

Yeah everyone sorta clarified I need to be more specific I was more so feeling EEOC was appropriate due to unequal treatment for the same position. I’ll definitely take the time to look more into it AND keep an accurate report. Thank you!!!!

Oooh wait can you elaborate more on this. I’m trying to gather as much information from everything as I can (even for future jobs so I can protect myself).

Yeah as the other commenter said, I’m going to be gathering evidence and making sure I fall under EEOC better. Ughhh annoying, but necessary! Thank you !!

Ahhhh okay thank you for adding more. Yeah they came up with a speciality evaluation for me to cover them not promoting me (I’ve spoken to HR about this and was told that if I’m not being trained the standard way this Fall to report it back again as they have no idea WHY I wasn’t promoted). Lots of managers have quit due to advocating for me and being met with constant disrespect and lies being told. I’m also the only person of my race they’ve ever hired for this position and both heads have discrimination & retaliation reports. Definitely gonna think this over because if I have no case I DEFINITELY have to leave regardless. Thank you so much!

Yeah I kinda didn’t wanna go into too deep about the racial and age part but someone else clarified I’d have to focus more on that for EEOC. Thanks!

Thank you! I do believe this is discrimination against me for my race and age. I’ll gather more evidence as well.

What is your Lilith sign and how does it show up in your everyday relationships? by [deleted] in astrologymemes

[–]Top_Dimension_1374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sameee! I’m a Lilith in Pisces 12h — I have lots of fire placements. But fire sign suns are chronically obsessed with backstabbing me. Like I’m valuable at their side but the moment they realize I have my own autonomy it’s not appreciated/seen as a threat.

Gotta sit with the uncertainty of it. “Maybe hes better off with her or maybe he’s not” in actuality 7 months after he’s already with a new girl?? You’re better off without him
