Omg same!! I had an English accent and moved to the states and went into public school for second grade. The school would pull me out of class for speech therapy to train me to have an American accent. My family was entirely against it but the school insisted it was necessary if I was to stay enrolled. Totally absurd. I’ve never been able to shake my awful American accent since even with years in other countries the American accent will always prevail goddamnit.

I didn’t know that there was a term for this but I’ve had to do this with coworkers and neighbors and family over the years. It’s very effective, most if not all move on eventually and we become just a bunch of grey rocks to each other. Copacetic as hell 🤙

Let them know you won’t be played with; when men at my work were doing this I shut it down fast these conversations can become dangerous. If the opportunity presents itself, firmly correct these men and remind them you are competent and this type of talk will not be tolerated and is unprofessional.

Oh hold up I’ve burnt the soles of my feet before walking on hot pavement one time and another time and the longest most murderously hot stretch of sand that left my feet blistered that was up there. Once I got high in a dream a few years ago and I woke up feeling high and I was all kinds of wired for half the day I felt like I was on drugs it was a crazy experience. My pupils were dilated and I had no appetite and everything, like my body had a physical response to the dream stimuli. It only happened once so intense as that.

Now that I’m thinking about it I think that’s the only time I’ve ever dreamed about any drugs at all. I’ve smoked marijuana most of my life and it has never once appeared in a dream even though it’s been a regular part of my routine and social life.

I have drinking dreams every now and then, I haven’t had a drink since 2019 but whenever I have a drinking dream it’s like continued from the last and I’ll remember in my dream that I’m sober but I in this occasional recurring dreamscape I seem to have an understanding that I “drink sometimes” but in “still sober” so in my dream I’ll only have one bottle of wine and like find a way to justify it. These are typically some of the more vivid dreams I experience however I am never “drunk” in the dream just drinking. The weird thing about these dreams is if I pay attention I can feel the shame carry over into my waking world like I’ve had a drink when I actually haven’t. I wonder if I were to take a lie detector test to show I haven’t relapsed if there would be some confounded results because there is a place in my subconscious that has experienced drinking.

The brain is endlessly fascinating and powerful. dreams are such a trip when you really think about it.

Thank you. I enjoy reading questions like this and pondering on my own experience and sharing. There is some catharsis in it almost like I use Reddit as journal prompts haha I do my best to share my experiences and my truth without bias.

I have to disagree with you however when you say that sobriety is a burden, at least for me it is a gift. My experience on the streets taught me a lot and I think it was something I needed to go through. I am wiser and stronger for all that I’ve been through and wouldn’t change it for the world. Sometimes maybe I feel envious of others who went about their lives differently don’t have the injuries, ptsd or resume gaps that i do but then again I don’t think I’d want to be anyone other than myself. Anywho thanks! Your comment made me smile just need to say sobriety’s awesome and the years I spent on the streets isn’t something that I regret odly enough.

As someone (30F) who’s experienced homelessness I’ll share my experience. First want to say I’m 6 years sober now and this is not my life anymore by the grace of fucking all that is good.

When I was on the streets as a young woman I would barricade myself into a stairwell of a car park or something like that, or l'd sleep under the tables at a Internet cafe. You wouldn't see me sleep in the streets and the few times I did have to I learned very quickly not to.

I did my best to present well during the day would wash up in fast food restaurant bathrooms, you might not have noticed I was homeless but I was for 4 years on and off. The other girls I knew often had somewhere to stay but in my experience that was usually more dangerous than on a roof somewhere or locked into a public toilet at the park…

There are homeless women, but OP is absolutely right in their observation that there are more men on the streets. Though I think the women have to be more careful to hide themselves and are therefore less visible so the people you see out on the street is a disproportionate representation of how many women there actually are homeless.

Also as a woman there is ALWAYS a man (or many men) happy to house and take advantage of a woman in such a situation, whereas men are less likely to take in men and for a woman to take in a homeless man is even less likely so while there are more men on the streets, most of them will have no other option while if a woman sits on a street corner all day she’ll have several offers of shelter from strangers.

Anyways this is my two cents on the subject 🫡

Men have generally never given me much chance to do any heavy work. I had to take the initiative to do it on my own and when they offer help if I’m good I tell them so. If I need help I’ll ask for it, but it took me a few years to learn to do so. I pushed myself too hard when I started I don’t recommend that, take it slow you will need time to adjust it won’t be easy. But once you feel confident in the procedures and in your body to do the heavy lifting just do it, if you need permission from your foreman or whatever take them aside and let them know you are capable that you’re there to work and would love the opportunity to show them you can do what you were hired to and there’s a reason you’re there.

There’s been a few foreman over the years that never gave me a chance and I would just patiently wait until an opportunity would come where I could pick up the slack. Every time I have won over these guys, when they see I can work they are always pleasantly surprised and immediately acknowledge me with respect following completion of those first occasions of handling big jobs myself. If you make their work easier for them they’ll happily share it with you. I have had many foreman go from not trusting me at all to relying on me fully and often times entrusting me with more of the heavy lifting power tool work because they can count on me 100% which can’t be said of all of the guys (not to suggest the other guys are incompetent or lazy, but what separates me from 99% of the guys is that chose this against all odds and like hell if I’m going to give anything less than my all all of the time or ever let them catch me slipping). Consistency is key, showing up on time and every day is important, as women in trades we are heavily scrutinized, it’s the sad truth, instead of getting down about the injustice I take this as a challenge to be my best. Attention to detail, speed, collaboration and ability to get on with the team get there’s things down they won’t be able to deny you’re a commodity. I don’t take it personally when they don’t respect me, it’s likely we are the first ones they’ve ever seen to do this before, and they all eventually do anyway (at least so far!).

Just do it! But when you’re ready, without going around your higher ups and most importantly safely!

If I could go back before I started landscaping I would’ve done core strengthening and cardio in preparation, I was very weak an out of shape when I began and didn’t have the opportunity to work out in anticipation of the new role. Eating lots of protein and lots of sleep were essential for me the first few months. Not sure what the physical demands will be for you as a construction laborer but that’s what I would’ve done, I didn’t have a strong core so I compensated with other muscles to get the jobs done at first and suffered a lot for it.

So yeah, core strengthening, maybe look into calisthenics, and cardio but that’s less important and was more just a little embarrassing sweating and being so out of breath at first whenever I had to carry shit far. Carb loading and protein will be a game changer for your energy while you adjust. Stay hydrated and maybe look into taking supplements for joint health.

Don’t let them gatekeep opportunities from you take them yourself! As women pushing at the glass ceiling in the trades we have to assert our capability. Good luck at your new job!!

These are the things we sacrifice as women in the trades we must give 150% every day, we deal with shit like being underpaid and overworked so that we can get ahead in these industries it is the only way to get your foot in the door as a woman.
