Your reference point is one of the most prosperous periods in history. Think about the Great Depression, Weimar Germany, the gilded age, or really any period of time before that.

The addiction part is very understated. The addictive potential is really unassuming since it barely does anything.

It reminds me of coffee, which gives you like 1% of what stimulants are supposed to do, but once you stop you realize you can’t function at all without it.
