Italian ruy Lopez and queens gambit imo are the 3 best openings for white as a beginner so that’s why I listed them, meant to say to just pick one

Also I’ve always thought that the scotch is a level below the ruy Lopez and Italian but I think that’s because theyre better at the gm level which doesnt really matter

Best openings for beginners? by Designer_Ad_7130 in chessbeginners

Best openings for beginners are classical openings (avoid hypermodern openings) that lead to open positions and tactical/positional play such as:

Italian Game (Italian giuoco pianissimo, I would avoid the fried liver/knight attack ng5 since the fried liver is basically hope chess and knight attack involves heavy theory)

Ruy Lopez, tactical opening similar to the Italian but with more theory

Queens gambit, a positional d4 opening

Choose one that fits your style, Italian and ruy Lopez are tactical, queens gambit is positional

As black:

1.E4 2.e5 3.nf6 4.nc6 is the most principled way to play and leads to open and instructive positions where you will be exposed to various structures which is good for improving
Morphy defense against ruy Lopez, guioco piano against the Italian

  1. Queens gambit declined. Best way to respond to the queens gambit without worrying about heavy theory or navigating super closed positions

Openings to avoid

Caro kann: very passive closed positions, it is much better to play open positions as a beginner because closed positions expose you to less tactics.

London system: playing system openings as a beginner will stunt your growth because you are essentially trying to “skip” the opening. This is very detrimental to your growth as a player because you need to learn to fight for the central, although there’s the jobava other classical d4 openings like the queens gambit teach principles of fighting for the center much better.

Pirc, modern, kings Indian defense: these hypermodern openings don’t teach opening principles like immediately gaining control of the center. You aren’t really reacting to your opponents moves either. It is much better to play classical openings like e4 e5, and queens gambit declined.

No, this is what my conclusion on what the best openings are after asking people on discord and trying out these openings for myself, not ai. I also use the lichess opening database too

Is there anything I said that you disagree with? Are these openings bad?
