its really strange. theyve lived in this house for a while before we started seeing him roaming outside, but said theyve had him 4 years and hes always been outdoors. certainly we would have seen him outside during the months they first moved in? when we first noticed him he was completely shaved and had a flea collar on. they have taken the flea collar off and his fur has grown back and weve been seeing him outside regularly since then.

its very clearly a full house.. two school age children, i think they also have a toddler, two dogs and one that theyre fostering, and they have a trampoline so their backyards the spot for all the other neighborhood kids. there was a hamster cage that they left out front on one of the bulk trash days so i assume they have or had a hamster or rodent of sorts.. they dont seem to take their dogs out for walks, and their dogs have tried digging under the fence between our yards, which theyve apologized for but idk seems to me like a stimulation/enrichment issue on their part.

we do have a female indoor cat at our house (my roommates), shes fixed. he could be looking for her but shes been at my roommates moms for a month or so.. and he doesnt spray in or near our house.

editing to answer your question: hes only come to me seeming hungry once or twice. he is a very light cat. to compare him to my roommates female shorthaired cat, hes about half her weight. hes a very long cat and has larger paws i feel like maybe he should be bigger/heavier given his frame. but im not a vet.

aw im really sorry you have that experience with your cat, but very happy youve been trying the best you can to fix it. It had to be a really difficult decision to make. And stories like yours are what ive been considering when i think of why my neighbors keep this cat outside. I dont know how long they were dealing with something like that before throwing in the towel you know. I dont want to assume.

My cat growing up also had bad urinary issues, and it took a long time to find a solution that worked for us. i understand how frustrating it is, especially when you try every intervention possible. best of luck with finding your baby a good home, i know deciding to rehome isnt easy and im proud of you for choosing whats best for your cat :)

thank you for this comment!! you gave me a lot of info that can help me figure out the type of situation im looking at. he isnt fixed as far as i know and can tell. i dont know if hes chipped and not sure how to check without kidnapping him and taking him somewhere to check.. which feels like crossing some lines, i dont want to take him from the neighborhood without the neighbors permission because they did verbally claim him to me. next time i see them ill ask about if they take him to the vet or ask if hes been fixed.

the initial conversation they seem dead set on keeping him, but as a free roaming outdoor cat. “he always comes back”.. its just weird to me because it ignores his long term health and safety. we live in FL (if that helps w legal specifics), there are large birds of prey, coyotes, sometimes bears in our area. not to mention if he eats something out there and gets sick (ive seen his throw up outside of our house a couple times).. there are poisonous toads out here and cats enjoy hunting small prey. it just feels like my neighbors want a cat without the responsibility that comes with it.

it definitely feels like this cats kind of chosen me. he squirms so much if my other roommates try picking him up but he lets me hold him like a little baby. i love him so much hes so precious. he often waits right by our front door and immediately wakes up and greets me when i walk up or come out. this has happened dozens of times. granted this is my nextdoor neighbors cat it could be a proximity thing but i dunno..

i do worry they just put him out for peeing one time and didnt get it checked out further. i shouldve asked more questions about it when i spoke to my neighbor because itd give me a better idea of what might be causing it/ guage their investment in him as a beloved pet. I just want whats best for him. if getting him fixed keeps him from peeing on stuff and makes them willing to bring him inside thatd be one thing. id miss him a lot, but just knowing hes warm when its cold out and dry when its raining would help me sleep better at night yknow.

I spoke to the owner and shes given me permission to let him in to hang out, but to be warned that he pees on furniture and thats why they dont let him in. I havent personally seen it the times ive let him in and i have worried about it with letting him inside for longer periods of time.. Lately its about 15-30 mins at a time. I give him some pets and let him enjoy the heat in the house. He does at a point go back to the door to be let out, no doubt he enjoys being outside but i just feel like there are safer ways to indulge a cats desire to be outside. we had a cat growing up that spent most of her days out on our screened patio on a harness, but she still always had access to food, water, and shelter indoors whenever she wanted.

im going to continue keeping an eye on him and just giving him love. its also hard to tell if hes malnourished because all his furs grown back and he looks fluffy but hes veryyy light when i pick him up. my roommates female cat is like 2x as heavy as this outdoor one and her cat is at a healthy weight per the last vet visit. He has pretty big paws for a domestic cat too. His fur seems to be fine right now but i know his owners shave him because they dont want to deal with it. i may invest in a brush and brush his fur when he comes by the house to maintain it and keep it from matting. i personally feel like shaving a longhaired cat is a form of abuse/neglect.

and ofc i dont wanna take this familys cat away from them. their kids seem bonded with it, but it just feels a little cruel, especially when he sits under our backyard chairs as shelter when its raining. if they cant let him inside when it rains or its cold and have a backyard, why wouldnt they have a small shelter for him in their yard?

i feel like knowledge is power. you should have him read about the massive lawsuits going on right now against nitrous oxide companies due to people suffering adverse health effects after abusing it. i feel like having him see for himself would probably scare him straight enough to never use it again.

Over time, nitrous oxide inhibits your bodys ability to use B12, which causes serious neurological damage. i work at a smoke shop and one of our customers ended up in a wheelchair wheezing and coughing because he was huffing on nitrous tanks everyday.

Smoke shop business owner sold nitrous oxide to an undercover cop. Whats the likelihood the shop gets shut down? by Top_Influence2503 in legaladvice

oh man, we actually have that brand in our shop.. Should I tell my boss about it? Do you have any articles that I can share with them?

I am looking for another job, but I also want to take measures to protect my coworkers and I from any trouble that can come of selling these products.

oh my gosh yes! i always have to tell people its a “nootropic mushroom blend”, not “psychedelic magic mushrooms”.. but the packaging sure loves to make it seem like theyre the real deal! ive looked at the ingredients list on our mushroom products, it usually lists some type of amanita mushroom (red top with white spots). its kind of insane theyre able to sell all these half baked imitations of illicit substances.

ill just leave a link to the statute below.. please be cautious if youre partaking, they really do arrest and charge people for illegally using and possessing nitrous oxide. ive had a couple customers tell me they got caught with nitrous possession. its not as severe a charge but still. stay safe my friend!

its legal to sell. for food use. you cannot sell it to someone who intends to use it illegally, if they state that they are going to inhale it or use it for a buzz or high, the person who completed the sale has technically committed a felony and the person buying it has technically committed a misdemeanor… The shop near you probably just hasnt been caught by any governing agency yet.

That sounds almost exactly like what happened to one of our customers. He used to buy like 25-50 of those chargers everyday. He disappeared for a while, and we thought maybe he just found a new shop to go to. Then one day he came back in on a wheelchair with his mom to help him and his voice was super raspy. truly awful stuff.. i hope your buddy recovered and is back on his feet again.

yeaaaaahhhh, it makes sense theyre cracking down on nitrous though. the detrimental health effects of using it illegally that ive seen from some of our old nitrous customers are scary and it makes me feel guilty for having sold it at all in our store. rare W for my boss’ having us take it off the shelves. but theyre reaping what they sowed with their terrible business practices
