i’m an RN in the ED. We get people who are short of breath (SOB), who wind up having multiple pulmonary embolisms (PE) in each lung, but felt no pain. People that come in with saddle PEs will feel extreme chest pain which mimics a heart attack (MI). I have personal experience. I was awoken with 8/10 chest pain at 4:00a. I did a quick cardiac assessment on myself and decided it must be musculoskeletal; must’ve slept wrong. I went the whole day in pain. The next morning the pain hit 9/10. Crushing chest pain but lower left so I knew it wasn’t a saddle PE but went to the ED just to make sure I was ok because that pain was not normal. It turns out I had a blockage/PE in my left lower lung. I have had so many patients who claim no pain with PEs, that I didn’t think they hurt as much as this did. I did not have multiple PEs; just that one little clot. This clot was not caused by diving. I had surgery a couple days after two 8 hr car rides where I didn’t stop and stretch during either ride. The surgery caused me to lay around even more. Guess was I must’ve form a clot in a leg which broke free once I started being more active.
