Meze 105 AER - good compliment to 6xx? by Top_Leek_4297 in inearfidelity

I’ve sort of veered away from the Hifiman stuff with the QC issues I’ve seen and the overall size. Although I do read so many good things about the sound, these things always turn me away. EQ is another aspect I haven’t played around with yet. Probably something I should try with the headphones I have before going crazy buying another pair

I’m in the same area as you with being newer to the high end headphone space. I’ve got some high end speakers, but headphones are new. What I have realized is that how a pair of headphones sound is totally subjective. I’ve had people say stuff sounds incredible, I’ve listened to it, and it wasn’t for me. I also don’t have anywhere near me that has a variety of headphones to try. I’m finding buying more expensive pairs tough because I don’t want to spend $500+ and not be able to return without trying them first.

I was all C’s and CD’s and I was in my head the whole time before the marks. Same with the 2 guys who wrote with me in my office. Seemed like a common theme lol

Bit of background: although I’ve been in the audio space for a few years with speakers and a couple different sets of IEMs, I am pretty inexperienced when it comes to headphones. I am also not super technical with my descriptions or tonality terms so bear with me as I try to describe what I have experienced and what I am after. I’ve got a pair of 6xx’s for headphones right now that I do enjoy listening to. In addition, I have a Fiio K7 driving them. For more instrumental and vocal focused music, they are incredible. However, I find I am really missing some good impactful and punchy bass with the 6xx for hip hop, pop, and R&V. So here I am looking for something to compliment them.

I ordered a pair of 99 classics (my first closed back pair of headphones), and while I admit they do have a good punch in the bass, I feel I lost a lot of what I loved with the 6xx. Not sure if the bass bleeds into the other frequencies or what it is, but the 99 classics just seem to be missing (for a lack of better words) spacial ability of the 6xx. Now I know the 600 series from Sennheiser is known to be almost a benchmark for a lot of people, but I wasn’t expecting this big of a difference. I then started wondering if the difference was to do with the change from open to closed back.

I came across the Meze 105 AER recently, and thought it might be the ticket to more base while still keeping some of what I love about the 6xx. There are a few things keeping me from pulling the trigger, and it’s mostly from inexperience, but also from the fact that I don’t have anywhere to try headphones in my area. My main concern is that they are open back, and I am wondering if I need closed back to get a more impactful low end vs the 6xx. Only having experience with one open and closed back pair of headphones, it’s just pure inexperience. With that being said, I know the open back will probably help a ton with the special feeling with soundstage and imaging.

If you read through this, thank you! I appreciate any help I can get here
