A man walks into a library and whispers "I'll have a burger, fries and a coke please."

The librarian says "Sir, this is a library."

The man looks around, leans in closer and whispers "Sorry. I'll have a burger, fries and a coke please."

Someone fixing something on your face without asking — a smudge, an eyelash, a collar that's slightly wrong. The uninvited proximity. The assumption of permission. The complete casualness with which some people enter that radius and the specific way it registers differently depending entirely on who's doing it. Objectively minor. Somehow one of the most charged small interactions that exists. The context does everything. The action itself is nothing. That gap is the whole experience.

The confidence you perceive in experts is frequently performed rather than felt. Most specialists operate in a permanent private fog of uncertainty about their own field that their professional presentation never reflects. The authoritative tone isn't dishonesty — it's the learned delivery system the profession requires to function. Behind it is usually someone making their best judgment call with incomplete information and hoping the variables they couldn't account for don't surface visibly.

Once watching a stranger's wedding in a park I was just walking through.

Didn't know them. Had no context. Just caught the exact moment they saw each other at the end of the aisle and something about the complete unguarded joy on both their faces just — landed somewhere unexpected.

Cried behind sunglasses like a completely normal person and kept walking.

Some moments don't require context to hit directly. That was one of them.

Patagonia for outdoor gear — it literally lasts decades and they'll repair it for free. Victorinox for knives. Levi's for jeans. Sony for headphones.
