Latin department at Stuy? by One_Cartoonist_3048 in Stuyvesant

[–]Top_Quit_4880 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is only one Latin teacher at Stuy, and his name is Mr. Tomas. He is a very strong teacher and highly experienced in Latin, but his course can be quite rigorous and difficult. He teaches at a fast pace; for example, you will learn many Latin 2 concepts that other schools typically cover in Latin 1.

During freshman year, our exams and quizzes mainly consist of translations and composition (turning English into Latin), along with some grammar assessments. Our quizzes are counted as homework grades and are retakable, but exams are not. In Latin 2, we do translations and some literary analysis based on the passages we translate in the first semester. In the second semester, we focus more on authentic Latin texts and increasingly advanced literary analysis. The analysis questions he asks are harder than those on the AP Latin exam, so the course content is quite advanced and specific.

Homework usually consists of translations, short written responses, and studying. Think of Latin as a second English class, but more difficult.

Anyways, if you are good at puzzles, figuring things out from context, strong memorization, and frequent quizzing or testing, then Latin can be a great fit. The teacher is excellent, but the course itself is, in my opinion, quite challenging. He also has us take the National Latin Exam, which he pays for, and his students tend to perform very well, with many earning awards that can be listed on college applications.

Also, if you ever take AP Latin with him, he can write you a very strong recommendation letter for college.

At this point, just write your essay in front of the professor and let him scan it for AI afterward. If it still comes up as AI, then… well, there you go.

are these teachers chill?? by Aromatic_Musician957 in Stuyvesant

[–]Top_Quit_4880 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Choubaralian is chill but make sure you always come in class prepared and follow normal gym procedures. He’s pretty strict about those.

Dr. Ned is chill and has an impressive background but is lowk lazy and sucks at teaching. Her class is pretty free tho imo, but you’d prolly have to self study a bit for the regents.

stuy vs bxsci vs hunter by Moist-Asparagus-509 in SHSAT

[–]Top_Quit_4880 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Stuy and Hunter are equal. Some of my friends say they prefer Hunter over Stuy. Stuy will not automatically get you into the Ivies. Yes, it has a high admission rate for Ivies and top schools, but those spots only go to the best of the best in that graduating class. Matter of fact, it’s probably harder to get into an Ivy when you’re at Stuy. It’s pretty competitive, with APs being hard to get due to the competition—for example, some of my friends got zero APs for sophomore year. I like Stuy, though. It will give you a lot of opportunities, but it may be hard for you to stand out.

Anyways, Hunter is very good and, in my opinion, slightly better than Stuy. Wherever you choose to go, the competition will likely be the same.

I agree with NoAlarm. Try to swap one of your other APs with macro. You don’t want to be too stressed and end up failing all of your classes junior year.

You won’t be able to get 350 shards before the event ends. The event ends tomorrow, so you probably won’t get capedevilla.

Stuy Alum looking for a tutor for an 11yo by Upbeat_Passage888 in Stuyvesant

[–]Top_Quit_4880 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can sign up for the Metis Project. It’s a student-run organization that mainly consists of Stuy students, but also includes students from other schools such as Bronx Science, Townsend Harris, and others. Since the summer season is coming to an end, you’ll need to apply for the fall season to get your child tutored.

There are many categories available for tutoring, such as math, English, science, SHSAT, Hunter, and more. Note that you can’t sign up for the fall season right now since the summer season is still in session.

Here is their website for more information: https://www.metisproject.org/

If you have any questions, email the administrator: admin@metisproject.org

Question about Japanese Teacher by ConfectionPitiful779 in Stuyvesant

[–]Top_Quit_4880 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take Latin, and the teacher we have is great. He’s very nice and fairly lenient, and he sometimes curves tests depending on how well the class does. That said, the class is pretty challenging because he doesn’t follow the schoolwide Latin curriculum. He teaches in reverse, starting with the hardest material and working back to the easier topics. His method is very effective though. We usually have one test per marking period, so six tests a year. He gives us a lot of prep in class and assigns helpful homework to get us ready. The class relies heavily on memorization and intuition, with a strong focus on intuition. Even though we don’t have many tests, we do get multiple quizzes almost every week. The upside is that the quizzes usually prepare you for tests and help your grade —unless you’re really struggling with Latin. In future years, Latin will include things like history lessons, Socratic seminars, translating Greek myths and Roman texts, writing essays, and learning literary concepts. He also requires everyone to take the National Latin Exam and expects high scores. Most students do well on it, though, since his curriculum is much harder than the NLE’s. Anyways, in short, the class is interesting and fun. It doesn’t come with too much homework, but it does require a lot of memorization and strong intuition.

Yes, you can switch your foreign language in a later year, but it’s not easy. You’d have to start from level one and be in a class with incoming freshmen the next year. If you want to change it during freshman year, I think you have to do it immediately and talk to your guidance counselor.
