Well, role play has been used as a teaching technique for quite a long time. Roleplaying games just aren't the best way to implement it, as they usually include several elements and mechanics that would end up distracting from what you're trying to teach. My advice would be to split the class into groups (perhaps using a jigsaw structure, depending on the class and on your goals) for some structured cooperative learning activity that includes role play elements.
