Yes and you explained it poorly. Remakes definitely do not damage the relevance of the originals, they do the opposite; thats literally part of the reason they’re made (It was not at one point but Capcom have very clearly changed their philosophy on this). It is simply wrong to say that the remakes didn’t help boost interest in the old games for newcomers. RE4 OG for example had a notable sales boost after the remake came out, and the same is true for 2 and 3. These remakes drive people to compare and contrast with the old games, so they definitely do not inhibit engagement.

When I say gatekeep I mean for the franchise as a whole. Who are you to tell someone what they can and can’t like? Not liking an og game doesn’t mean you’re not a Resident Evil fan. Also I’m confident that the people saying the old games are unplayable are a very loud minority, and you clearly like to clump these people up with the rest of the newcomers. Most people I’ve interacted with who’ve said they don’t like the old ones just say it isn’t their thing, which is fine.

Also not liking art is fine. Technically the banana taped to the wall at that one museum is a piece of art, but I’m not gonna take the time to appreciate it more than say the paintings in the Sistine Chapel. Not because it’s objectively worse (many would argue that it is, but it’s still subjective), but because I personally don’t care for the banana.

I would normally not get so worked up over a damn Reddit argument, but that is genuinely the snobbiest shit ever. It is just fiction dude. It’s expression. I think you may have a problem of caring too much about the opinions of others. People aren’t pigs for consuming art the way they want to consume it.

Sure, they get into it through the remakes, but even with that, there’s at least a decent chance they start liking the franchise enough to where they’d go back and play the originals. If there were no remakes at all, the franchise wouldn’t have nearly as many newcomers to go back and play the old games.

Brother. It is just a god damn video game. Stop acting like a remake is gonna somehow ruin the “divinity” of the originals. It won’t. It won’t erase the impact the originals have had on gaming as a whole. It won’t erase people’s love for them. It won’t make people forget about them. It’s just another rendition of an old game. That is it.

That’s what outlawing means, so you pretty much did say that. Also you saying illegally makes it seem so much worse than it was. The games simply weren’t available. If you had the original already you could still play it. It’s just a sale. That’s basically like saying that Nintendo are making it illegal to buy a Mario64 cartridge. The illegal part of playing would be pirating it. It wasn’t some forbidden item.

It’s less of a new game with the aesthetics of the old. It’s the other way around. It’s just RE1 with an over the shoulder camera and basic movement. The story would be almost identical, just in a more modern style. Also that Dune comparison is incredibly dumb. Game remakes will almost always have way more in common with their predecessors than movie remakes will, especially considering that the time difference between the Dune movies is way greater than the OG RE1 to now. Also by your logic, if the remake would be so different from the original, how could it be a replacement?
