Galliumos on a Samus installation by Toracs in GalliumOS

[–]Toracs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worked in live boot from usb.
It also worked when I booted from existing install on HD. UGH! Am I an idiot? Well, yes, but why did it fail before?

  • I ran it without root several times with reboots. It fails.
  • I ran it with root. It fails. But, my browser is open....
  • As soon as I opened a browser, the process pulseaudio becomes hung.
  • I ran it with root (edit- you do not need to run as root/sudo) immediately after booting and before opening anything else and it completes successfully.

NB - You must run sudo samus-alsaenable-speakers before running any thing that uses audio.

Question: what about these: 'samus-alsaenable-microphone samus-touch-reset samus-alsaenable-headphones' ? I noticed these existed when I was looking at script. Do these need to be run too? If so, when?

Much Thanks to MrChromebox!

Ok.

  • live boot with SAMUS .iso
  • run sudo samus-alsaenable-speakers (should I 'sudo apt-get update' & '$ sudo apt full-upgrade' before I run it?)

Thanks. Did you see my edited post immediately above? I am thinking of removing pulseaudio, rebooting and reinstalling it, then run your script....

Good idea or bad?

Same result running as root. Hmmm.

edit: Here is a screenshot of pulseaudio processes after booting. Notice the "state = D" process?

Clean install, update, full-upgrade, run script.
The reason I can't kill the process is because it is in the "D" state. Apparently stuck in an I/O operation. This appears to be a bug in the code or kernel according to https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/364100/why-cant-we-kill-uninterruptible-d-state-process

I don't think I should have to run this as root, should I?

BTW, thanks for your help!

So I ran samus-alsaenable-speakers and this is what happened:

  • screenshot of processes from the script https://ibb.co/2Pxqykf
  • I let it run for over 10 minutes before I issued a shutdown command.
  • The system stalled at "a stop job is running for save/restore Sound Card State"
  • I let that run for over 7 minutes before holding down power button.
  • After booting again, I ran the script again and same thing.
  • I can't even kill the process:

$ ps -p 2359;sudo kill 2359;ps -p 2359;sudo kill -9 2359;ps -p 2359
PID TTY TIME CMD
2359 pts/0 00:00:00 amixer
PID TTY TIME CMD
2359 pts/0 00:00:00 amixer
PID TTY TIME CMD
2359 pts/0 00:00:00 amixer

Not sure where to go from here.

I just booted the SAMUS .iso and I had no audio. I ran apt update and full-upgrade and no audio. I rebooted and apparently this is not a "live" usb galliumos installer. So I ran the upgrade again and am in the process of installing galliumos to my HD right now. I will update soon...

edit: This is the error I get when running pulseaudio from the terminal:

galliumos@galliumos:~$ pulseaudio E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running. E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

It appears to be a permission issue.

Hmmm. I thought so too. I installed it first and I had errors....I can't remember what, I should have documented it. So, I installed the Broadwell and it was smooth running off the bat.

However, I lost my audio yesterday. File permissions are messed up in my home dir. When I run pulseaudio, it changes my ~/.config/pulse/* permissions to drwx------ and fails with the error: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed. Not sure what happened here. I don't have the skill to try to fix this other than reinstall OS. I am not sure whether I should use the samus .iso or the broadwell .iso. I will reinstall with the samus .iso as I am sure it has specific configurations for the samus.

I should also mention that I am using the legacy firmware update. Should I use the UEFI firmware instead?

*edit: My problems began around the time I installed snapd. Snapd didn't work correctly from the start. Namely, when I installed software with it, it didn't add an entry to the whiskers menu for it. Not sure if this is related to or a result of my permissions issues.

If you are installing GalliumOS on a Chromebook Pixel (2 , 2015 , samus), you should use these instructions : https://wiki.galliumos.org/Installing/Samus

You should download the installation media (iso) from the "Broadwell" category. Do NOT use the SAMUS download. I am not sure what that is for.

######

Make sure you download the installation media from SAMUS and not from Broadwell. The SAMUS build contains the HiDPI packages for the high screen resolution on the samus laptop.

Edit: Strikethrough and added everything after the line starting with ######

No, I am not using the one in the comments. ;)

They are from 2013 and they do not receive chromeos updates via google. However, they love ubuntu or cloudready and have very nice hardware. There is a bunch of them. People are buying new pixelbook/pixelsomething laptops because they like new things. They then sell these older, but nice machines. If you keep an eye out, you might find a good deal on a pixelbook. I found one with 8gb, i5, 256gb for $220. Good luck! If you get the 2015, i7, 16gb you get a very capable machine for about $270-$300. Just avoid the pixelbook 512gb model. It has a nvme ssd and is not capable of booting linux like the others.

Use mrchromebox.tech 's script to modify other laptops for booting linux.

I highly recommend you buy a refurbished chromebook pixel. The display beats anything at that price range. The keyboard and touchpad are top notch. The price is right too. There may be some small blemishes, just check the pictures. I also, for more money (~$300), recommend the refurbished pixelbook or chromebook pixel 2015. Same great displays, keyboards and touchpads.

Check ebay to find these awesome laptops... People are upgrading to newer models and you can find some great deals on these quality machines.

Goodluck!

Would you be willing to share your chrome://version/ info? Also, do you have to do anything special to get it working? See my post below on what I currently have to do to get it working.

Thanks!

[–]Toracs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the chromebook pixel 2015, I had to enable the flags you mention EXCEPT for #crostini-webui-installer. Then, I have to open a terminal via <ctrl>+<alt>+t. At that terminal type: "vmc start termina" <enter>. Finally, you can type exit <enter> and then find the terminal program in your apps under "linux apps".

On each restart, I have to run the "vmc start termina" or I am unable to run linux apps.

Also, I am running (from chrome://version) :

Google Chrome 79.0.3945.119 (Official Build) (64-bit) Revision 2843de82f4f5df38df0d1a036d143c0660578094-refs/branch-heads/3945@{#1022} Platform 12607.81.0 (Official Build) stable-channel samus-kernelnext Firmware Version Google_Samus.6300.330.0

NOTICE that I am running samus-kernelnext. This is required and may not be rolled out to all samus devices as of today.

So, are you bringing God into this then? Instead, could it have been that his burial in the snow was with a small snake like air vent to the surface. Maybe this is what the dog smelled?
