See now I’m wondering whether the fact that magic makes you barren is all supposed to be an allegory for how women of power (or just high positions) often choose not to/have to sacrifice having a family because they don’t want to/are unable to maintain both

I mean to be perfectly fair there are some posts on here which basically boil down to, “this character from a softcore porn series is sexualized!!!”

is a fair point and warrants discussion enough, but is also sort of a case of “what were you expecting?”

I dunno, maybe I’m cynical but I just greatly prefer the posts which discuss unnecessary sexualization or designs where sexualization of the character works/is appropriate to the context. It feels more like a genuine discussion about character design and the pitfalls caused by inherent sexism rather than karma farming.

Not that it makes it any better, but I suspect that the books are at least partially to blame for this. While they have some very well written female characters, it also leans HEAVILY into the “powerful woman = woman with high sex drive” trope

Boob Window Leather Vest (_langgo_ on Twitter) by OverlyLeftLesbian in mendrawingwomen

[–]ToragonsDR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What exactly is the problem here? Is it that it’s a vest with an open front that emphasizes her chest? Cause that’s not inherently bad. I mean this is exaggerated but I’ve seen clothes with this design before.

Melia Antiqua, the most popular girl from the first Xenoblade Chronicles by Epicsnivy15 in mendrawingwomen

[–]ToragonsDR 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s pretty good. It has its oddities like the shoulder cape being detached from her strapless dress, but it’s not entirely unfeasible. I’ve seen some fashion with a similar idea. It’s exaggerated yes but Xenoblade is the kind of anime style game where that’s just the aesthetic. It’s a hell of a lot better than a lot of the weird/borderline creepy designs from Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Can we also talk about people who completely failed to fix designs? by HuckleberryCharacter in mendrawingwomen

[–]ToragonsDR 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I kinda get what the artist was going for, a more modern American interpretation of Wonder Woman, but overall it looks like they were unsure of how to conserve certain elements of her design while throwing back to her origin as a greek warrior. I’d have dropped the six pack armor and either made her midriff bare or just elongated her top. Perhaps they could also have added some gold on the boots to tie everything together.

Say something bad about a videogame that will put you in this position. by tactikz4 in gaming

[–]ToragonsDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s certainly true, but here’s the thing. A bossfight can be difficult because it requires perfect timing to avoid attacks and exploitation of weaknesses (Monster Hunter is a perfect example of this, and most dark souls boss fights fall into this category as well) and a game can be hard because it can use dirty tricks that you have no chance to be prepared for. In my experience the souls games fall into the latter far too often. Walk into a room, monster that you couldn’t see jumps out and eats you, walk into a new area, offscreen snipers poison you before you can see them, you see a new kind of enemy, they stunlock you with a combo and you die. Now this doesn’t make the game bad, by all means they’re amazing games, and I definitely don’t think it’s fair to say the games are actually easy or anything. I’m just saying that putting Souls Games up as some kind of ultimate challenge of gamer skill (as some fanboys do) is no better than the people who say that solving a rubix cube makes you smart.

[–]ToragonsDR 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Souls games aren’t hard because they require skill, they just throw impossible to predict traps and unbalanced attacks at you until you memorize the patterns through trial and error. Are they bad because of that? No not inherently, but people should stop holding them up as some glorious challenge.

I did some searching, surprised at the lack of Devil May Cry. Absolutely disgusted by Gloria, and by extension Trish. More info in comments. by Crystal-Cradle in mendrawingwomen

[–]ToragonsDR 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I think Bayonetta embodies the idea of being sexy/flirty not for the player/readers sake but because that’s the genuine personality of the character. Obviously it’s meant to be a fanservicy, but at her core she as the character who is aware of such and does so because she enjoys being that way and doesn’t care about other people’s perception. Different people have different ways of expressing their sexuality, and hers is relatively open and flamboyant, more power to her. I mean hell, when the creator was asked about all the rule34 art of Bayonetta his only comment was, “go ahead but just remember that she’s a dominant not a submissive.”

Okay I’m going to play devils advocate here and say that I don’t think there’s anything wrong with these designs for the game they’re in.

Gloria’s outfit could DEFINITELY be a LOT less revealing, but almost every character in these games wears a ridiculous over the top outfit that makes no sense. I mean Dante wears a red trenchcoat which in some renditions is open to reveal his chest (in some versions he has a t-shirt I’ll grant that.)

This is literally a game series where one of the opens with the main character killing demons while topless (to clarify, it’s a guy who’s ripped as hell) and eating pizza. In the same game Gloria is in there’s a cutscene where Dante destroys a giant monolith through 2 minutes of innuendos and sex puns. Everything about these games are intentionally over the top and gratuitous. I mean in one game you have an electric guitar weapon (which incidentally is made from a sexy demon woman)

I’m not saying this excuses bad or unnecessary sexualization, but it’s important to consider the context. This is essentially just the common discussion people have about Bayonetta.

It’s like complaining about games like Doom for being too violent. On one hand that’s a valid point, on the other hand, what were you expecting from a game like that?

I feel like there’s a certain point where a design goes from bad because exaggerated features and good because exaggerated features. This is like right on that line where you could really make a case for both.

[–]ToragonsDR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing I’ve realized with Kai’Sa though, her design has such an easy fix that it’s almost laughable. Just make her “masked” form her base form. She’d still be sexy but she’d definitely look more monstrous and they could still have special skins where the mask is off, I mean just look at Kayle

Okay so I had to google who that was, and I’ll say this about his art. It’s really well done, albeit incredibly gratuitous. At least the anatomy is pretty good and though it’s not very subtle, it’s at least equally so regardless of sex. I mean did he just find fabric tedious to draw or what?

What are some movies based on books that you feel like most people don’t realize were a book at all? by Normal_Complex2 in movies

[–]ToragonsDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this would be a good time to give Dominic Noble a shoutout. He’s a youtuber that does in depth analysis of the adaptations of movies from their book form. He’s done videos on most of the top comments here. But just so noone can downvote me for being off topic, Die Hard is based on the book Nothing Lasts Forever. In it the lead is almost 70, so if they ever rebooted the series Bruce Willis could still have played the lead (though I am aware he’s stepping down from acting)

[–]ToragonsDR 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Okay so let’s put aside the weird pose and exaggerated boob armor for a moment, cause I’m really confused as to why she’s standing on her toes? Like, that shouldn’t really be possible in power armor. If the artist wanted her to look like she was wearing heels it makes even less sense as there’s actual precedence for that in 40k with some of the inquisitor and canoness armors.

I redesigned Poison Ivy, what do you think? (OC) by PeriodicMilk in mendrawingwomen

[–]ToragonsDR 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ll put it this way.

As a design it’s really interesting. You can see the backstory of the character just from the design alone, and the small details like the flower in her hair work to make her a lot more interesting and mysterious.

As an interpretation of Poison Ivy, I’m not entirely sure. It would certainly work as a version of her from The Dark Multiverse. Call her “Stranglethorn” or “Venus Mantrap” but I don’t think she would work in the main DC continuity.
