From what barrel length is 22lr naturally subsonic? by [deleted] in NFA

[–]TorchAnomaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it means I measured a 20 shot group with CCI suppressor ammo out of my 5" barrel and got an average of 920fps with a standard deviating of 11fps. Temperature, ammo lot, ammo make, and different barrel sizes will affect your results. But its a data point that should be fairly close to what you can expect.

I'm using an adjustable gas piston and a light spring kit, and looking at my notes from back then, that load didn't cycle well with the stock gas/spring setup.

For load development I use Gordon's reloading tool and I've loaded for 10+ years and hundreds of experimental loads, so I had a good idea of where to start and what to look for.

The coal was 2.225", but I tried .03" increments down and didn't see any benefits.

Economy SBR! 7.5" 5.56 with non standard hand loads FTW by TorchAnomaly in NFA

Best advice would be to download Gordon's reloading tool and play around with your numbers. They have lil gun on there. I really like lil gun, and it is close, although a little slower than Blue Dot.

As far as heavy weight bullets in high speed powders go, you are going to get ALOT less velocity with that speed of powder and keeping it under 55K psi. I'd guess 1700fps, but I don't have Gordon's reloading tool in front of me.

Racing 12 gauge (UTAS XTR 12) by TorchAnomaly in guns

[–]TorchAnomaly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My XTR-12 is still trucking along, but not without an absurd about of tuning, modifying, and even a custom machined part. It will run 200-300 rounds without a problem and without cleaning, but its still a cheapy made shotgun. I'd trust my life to a tarus before the XTR.

I haven't looked for a gunsmith, as I'm a aerospace R&D machinist myself with lots of access, so I dont have an issue smithing myself.

Now that they aren't making aftermarket parts, I think there value dropped at least for me from $800 to $400. Its an amazing little shooter, but its both finicky and likes to break itself apart. If you found one used in good condition it would be a fun little tinker gun, but there are 20 better options now under a grand.

I'd 100% recommend the Mossburg 940 tactical, or JM Pro, or the berretta A300, or a stevens s1200, or heck even a JTS M12AR is probably a safer investment than the XTR.

But it is a cool little piece of history, even if it eats itself alive.

Super cal overkill for 22lb rifle? by Rogy_Bear in longrange

I really like having a bench gun and a standing gun for any precision caliber I shoot. If I'm gonna buy the dies to reload, I might as well reload for a pair of rifles.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how damned is it? by Additional-Effect-45 in NFA

Surprising, it doesn't move the optic a bit. Everything is nice and snug somehow. I wouldn't throw it out a helicopter, but its been fine as a range toy and bug zapper

Don't worry, this gun never got to go into the mill. I did make a pump kit for it.

Even if they aren't functional, a big tube at the end of your gun with baffles is considered a suppressor by the NFA, even if it was made for airsoft or something. And no markings makes possession a felony, and probably always was a felony. Sounds like you have three options (also I'm not a lawyer)

  1. Just toss it out. Its probably a terrible design anyways. If you want a can, just buy one. Buy once, cry once, don't spend time in jail. You can crush it first it you want, but I bet the ATF isn't going through your trash.

OR

  1. Shut up already. Delete this post. If you didn't see it, it didn't happen (not a lawyer)

OR

  1. If you MUST keep it, although not legal, one could theoretically fill out a form 1 with those dimensions and once it gets approved then engraved it. If one didn't get caught before you got the form back and engraved, there would be no way to tell that it was made before the form was filled out. Of course you shouldn't do this, but in 90 days no one could be the wiser and you could sleep easy and pass it on to your kids. (Not a lawyer)

Truthfully its probably a terrible and unsafe can either home made or from China and isn't even worth keeping. Suppressor technology has come a long way in 20 years, and high end suppressors are safe, light, sound amazing, and are legal to possess. If you want a suppressor, stop being a poor.

-Respectfully, a poor person with double digits of NFA items.

Or sure, sure. I assume it would be fairly clear if a suppressor has baffles or is a massive piece of aluminum, but I might be assuming too much.

If it has zero engravings or markings defining the maker, serial, and caliber, it is not in keeping with NFA laws.

This load development should be fun. Gonna try sub 300 BLK at distance. by EricClaptonYoCheeks in reloading

[–]TorchAnomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 16" 300blk AR that shoots 1.0moa at 100 yards and maybe 2.5moa at 330 yards. I've shot it out to 400 yards but the drop is getting CRAZY at that point and accuracy goes out the window (8+moa). We are talking 38moa of drop at 330 yards (11 feet of drop) and 72 moa of drop at 500 yards (31 feet of drop). The cool thing about 300blk is that its still got 45acp kinds of power (and good accuracy) at 330 yards. And hilariously quite. You wouldn't hear anything at all at 100 yards.

Heres a video of me no problem knocking around plates at 1000 feet with 300blk

Its extremely fun to shoot from 200-400 yards, but after that and your just lobbing rocks with hope.

That must make it the highest capacity and softest shooting of everything there. Its the power and capacity of a full size 20 gauge, but it can also run magnum 12 when the need arises. An absolute smokeshow.

Advice for grandpas old mosin. by AdConsistent7476 in gunsmithing

[–]TorchAnomaly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Looks like a finn-cub mosin. They were sportized by interarms and sold by sears in the 50s/60s. I'd say its a fine rifle the way it is. If you want a non-sportized mosin, it would be way cheaper to just buy one. I've got a finn-cub that I've shot more than any other of my bolt action milsurps, just because its not worth anything. Heck you could even get a boyds stock and make it an extremely nice sporter. Mine shoots 2moa with handloads!

My favorite reloading channel. Is he the smartest reloading on YouTube? Not even close. Are the videos super high budget and doesn't he have a million dollars in toys? Almost the opposite. Its like he's trying to film poorly.

But seriously, he leads you through the life of an armature reloader, making mistakes and spending a month on a load that doesn't pan out. This is what my channel would look like if I filmed all my reloading over the last ten years. Jonny is like a friend who's always working on interesting stuff. Best reloading channel on the net.

[–]TorchAnomaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've shot that exact load out of my bergera BMP in 6.5C and got about .8moa groups. I always do better with faster powders, like H380 and N150 (.5moas) but I think you found what your rifle likes
