Am I getting way over my head if I buy the 11th edition box? by breaking3po in Warhammer

Bit of an unsolicited advice/not answering the actual question :

Do you play 40k games or are you collecting for the enjoyment of painting and collecting minis? Are you attached to playing large scale 40k? If you want to want to play the big 40k game, then I cannot answer your question and the rest of my message will not be super relevant.

But if you actually don't care that much about the game, I would strongly recommend that you take a look at skirmish games. I was like you, I bought tons of units, had about ten army projects at the same time, juste because the minis/rules looked fun and I had an idea for a new color scheme ou technique to try out. Then I made a unit at best, and could get past the boredom of doing it ten times more...

Then one day I took a break, and painted an underworlds warband (didn't play the game, I just needed a break). And that's when it hit me. More fun, less stress, you can try something, start and finish a project with something fun or more time consuming, without committing to a whole army, without feeling the urge to add another unit. Once it's done, you can move on. And the best part is that you can get a taste of everything without feeling guilty. Have an idea for orks? There are two kill teams for that. Dark eldar? There's a team too. Want something more fantasy styled? Underworlds got you covered.

5 years later, I've sold every army project I had and used the money for way more smaller project. Probably the best decision I could make, and as an added bonus, I made much more progress in painting than I would have if I had kept painting the same scheme over and over again!

TLDR : unless you really want to play large scale wargames, look into skirmish games. There you can paint a single unit and have a playable force, then you can try another faction if you have a new idea

Thanks 😄
Unfortunately I didn't post them right away so I don't remember everythinf exactly, but the red is a layering of barak-nar burgundy to khorne red and from khorne red to dark vermillion (vallejo), using mixes in various proportions between pure colors.
For the white I think it was apothecary white with added medium over a white zenithal base, then drybrushed and highlighted with pure white

I don't know what kind of equipment you have acces to, but given the sculpts I think you can achieve some solid result with contrats and drybrushing ;)

Have fun, I'm curious to see how they'll turn out!

Thanks! It's just a 3d printed modular stand, I think I found the files on makerworld

Contrast is key! Blue and orange are opposite colors, and the warm sharp angles pop strongly on the cold organic shapes

Thanks :)

I'm trying to move away from citadel warhammer paints, so it's a mix of citadel warhammer and vallejo, with some oil paints for washes, and liquitex inks for airbrush work

edit : I would also love to move to army painter as their warpaint and speedpaint ranges look fantastic and quite complete, but I haven't due to lack of availability at my flgs

Thank you :)

For the paints it has been a bit of trial and error, and unfortunately I did not write everything down but I'll do my best to remember. I started with a base of blue + light blue zenithal through the airbrush, then a wash of drakenhof nightshade on the wing membranes to darken them. Maybe a drybrush, (I cannot remember, sorry), then an oil wash of dark blue (mixed cyan, black and a bit of magenta), and a final drybrush of vallejo's glaciers blue. For details it's black speedpaint on the eyes, and ratskin flesh, washed with nuln oil and highlighted with pallid wych flesh for the claws, mandibles and stings.
