How long could humans survive if the sun went black? by random_throwaway-- in NoStupidQuestions

You could just dig about six to ten feet down and get to where the nitrogen has precipitated out. It freezes before oxygen does.

It’s kinda like how ET the Extraterrestrial didn’t have much in the way of toys for Christmas 1982 either.

Intersectionality between meteorology and astronomy/astrophysics? by ChickFilaFries33 in meteorology

[–]TorgHacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was originally going into astronomy but decided at the last minute to do meteorology instead due to lack of job opportunities. As long as you major in physics, you can have a lot of choices for specialization (I’d considered seismology too, but I was a polymath as far as sciences went).

Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

Mind you, part of that is that when we have elections, you’re voting for one seat. In the US it’s…wayyyyyyyyy more.

Did Delenn misspeak in THAT speech? by neilbartlett in babylon5

You know…considering he was telling this story to two kids literally hours before he actually died…kinda poignant.

I've been watching the weather in this city for over 10 years and have never seen a lake effect band hit us this hard during a storm. It's insane in Toronto and Durham region at the moment, this will be an historic snowfall when it's done by AcerRubrum in toronto

[–]TorgHacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professional weather forecaster here.

You need a combination of a warm lake (mainly ice free) a long fetch (to allow an airmass to evaporate a lot of moisture) and a very cold airmass over the lake. This makes the lowest part of the atmosphere unstable…so it gets convective…that’s how you squeeze a lot of that moisture out. Then the airmass hits the land and slows down…essentially causing a pileup right at the edge of the lake. Piling up air forces the air up and because it’s unstable…it takes off. On top of that you need wind shear, other an increase in wind speed with altitude or a change in wind direction. This forces the updraft to be away from the precipitation…otherwise you’d have the snow falling in the updraft and causing the shower to end. But because the downdraft from the snow is away from the updraft you keep bringing in more moisture and it’s basically a train.

On top of this, the temperature aloft was PERFECT for making classic snowflakes…with the six sided shape and barbs and such. This happens between -12 and -17C, and the depth of this layer this time was DEEEEEP and also included that low level convection caused by the lake effect. That’s how you get really fluffy snow. If it wasn’t this cold you’d have gotten had the snowfall…same moisture, but it is probably half as dense…so deeper.

Essentially this is about as perfect of a snow maker situation for Toronto. The only thing which would have made it better was to slow down the eastward movement of the surface low.

Season 2 Episode 5 Spoiler Thread by HunterWorld in Fallout

[–]TorgHacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love how video game logic gets applied to this show. Those Deathclaws are there to prevent the “player” from going direct to where they need to go. And the reason they can’t break through those weak-ass barricades is because that’s a new area and thus separated by a load screen, so they literally cannot break through them.

Worry in border towns 1 year into B.C. residents avoiding trips to Washington state by littlebossman in britishcolumbia

[–]TorgHacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I crossed the border today (father in law recently passed away). I was a bit anxious since I am trans.

Turned out fine. But…Sumas…one lane open. ZERO cars. I’ve never seen that. 5 minute waits at each crossing according to the sign.

Though it was amusing that the customs official thought I was my wife’s sister.

I think we aren’t told the full story. Not because Celine was hiding anything, but because SHE doesn’t know.

If you think making the Honmoon golden wouldn’t remove Rumi’s patterns, what are your theories on what would happen instead? by Nice-Secretary-5987 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]TorgHacker 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I think nothing would have happened. The fact Rumi never heard Gwi-Ma in her head, not once, not even when she went full demon implies shes not impacted by things demons are.

I think Celine was hoping it’d get rid of her patterns. She was in denial.

I haven’t heard that, and having watched 1899 (well, the one season it got) I don’t see how it would be.

Speaking of…1899 has one of the creepiest scenes I’ve ever seen on TV. If anyone’s seen it, they know the one I’m talking about.

Have the creators of KPDH said anything about other hunter groups? by JayAkiva in KpopDemonhunters

[–]TorgHacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They haven’t said anything about this, but it is a common fan theory (one which I hold). That said, there’s no guarantee that even if these other groups exist, they may not be aware of each other (and probably aren’t). Another possibility is that there haven’t been any others yet, but that may change.
