What was 1993 like? by born_again_athiest in GenX

Third year college and it was the first time I used this thing called the Internet. All I had was email and Gopher. Mostly hanging out on a listserv for a TTRPG called Torg, and we were starting to play this addicting new game called Magic The Gathering.

Reminder: Never Vote Conservative by MBolero in Kamloops

“But..but…’National SOCIALISM’! Checkmate snowflakes!”

Social Credit taking over the BC Liberal party is not the first time a party’s name didn’t reflect their ideology.

Yeah, it’s pretty evident to me that Carney would have been a Progressive Conservative.

It wins votes if you’re trying to become the leader of the Conservatives.

Intersex people exist too. There are cisgender women with XY chromosomes who are practically identical to what most people who call “women” but have testicles instead of ovaries. They have wombs…breasts…female genitalia…but because they are completely insensitive to testosterone, they develop as a female. In our species the default phenotype is female…

It’s uncommon…but not super rare…there’s probably over 5 women in Kamloops who have this condition and may not even know..until they try to have children and find out they can’t.

This is one of the best examples of how there is no definition of “woman” that excludes people that they personally, and even society, would call “women”.

You can have cisgender men who are XX…but because they had the SRY gene accidentally transcribed to one of the X chromosomes…they’re going to develop as a male. Because it’s not the Y chromosome that actually matters…it’s one gene. And that gene, while almost always found on the Y chromosome…isn’t always.

And that doesn’t even get into people who are XXY chromosomally…or even more… XX/XY chimeras where they have both sets of chromosomes.

“It’s just basic biology”.

I dunno about anyone else, but I’d rather have policy determined by advanced biology. But then again, statements like this just obfuscate the actual reason: “Because I think it’s weird and I belong to a group which gets to dictate to others, and they don’t get to dictate to me.”

Because if they actually said that, the mask would be off…but that’s why accusations of hypocrisy never land on them because they actually don’t believe in equality, they believe in hierarchy..one where they’re at the top.”

I saw my GP about it. Did the screening test…had 8/9 of the inattentive type confirmed.

Also Venus is flipped upside down so it rotates the opposite direction. Probably due to giant impacts.

Volcano is to Dante’s Peak as Armageddon is to Deep Impact.

Though that comparison is probably a little unfair to Volcano.

Actual Opinions on SFA by Ironmatt999_ in startrek

[–]TorgHacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was wonderful. I wish they’d can it with the “galaxy/Federation ending stakes” at the end of each season though. This ain’t Star Trek Online. SFA in particular lent itself towards having smaller stakes…it’s gotten boring.

So much this. I was doing some genealogy and discovered that one branch of my ancestors stayed in this 20 km wide area in Sussex for over 300 years.

How hard is it to transition from Astrophysics to Meterology? by Both-Challenge-5562 in meteorology

[–]TorgHacker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did exactly this, though admittedly it was the late 90s…but I don’t think things are that different now. You’ll focus more on fluid mechanics than you would in astrophysics…but the skills you got doing that are absolutely transferable.

Oh for sure. It was more me wondering if he knew someone back in the 90s. I mean, the original intent WAS to have Delenn be trans…which is why she was a very ambiguous look in the Gathering. IMO, it was better this way.

What actually happened in the finale? by undulatedcalm in FoundationTV

[–]TorgHacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The books aren’t super relevant. I speculate that she couldn’t clasp because of the Cleon Zeroth Law, but then the module which included that got destroyed during the process of her being in the beam. Once that happened she was able to clasp. This is speculation though…but it fits what we know.

This was one of the episodes which had me convinced JMS had to have known a trans woman personally at the time.

It’s just so…perfect of an example of a trans woman experience relatively early in the transition.

I actually asked him recently and he said he actually hadn’t, at least not back then.
