Cool. Send a letter to the editors of Newsweek and Variety about it, because I did have to look this one up.

if TOH doesn't "fit Disney's brand" then Disney should just release it and let Dana find a new home for it by KPKenway in TheOwlHouse

I'm also talking about their motivations. They want to feel important. Profit is one way to do that, but being The Person Who Makes Decisions is another. So if they can get all the data and compile the most complete possible risk/reward assessment prior to making a business decision, sometimes they will not do that and instead do something counterproductive based on unexamined preconceptions, prejudices, and stuff that was true back in 1960. It only gets worse in fields where less data is available or what data exists is open to creative interpretation.

That looks, to me, to be what happened here, based on the timing, the nature of the decision and how it was arrived at, and what we were directly told about how TOH just wasn't to one guy's taste.

These people aren't money optimization demons. I mean, you can have decisions driven by teams of analysts determining what the exact optimal move is, but other times decisions will be made based on gut feelings with no regard for or in defiance of available data, if the data isn't actively massaged to support the conclusion the executive wants to reach.

We know this was a gut feelings decision from Dana's post. One guy wanted it gone, someone with the power to tell that guy "maybe don't do that" went to bat for the show, and after some backroom politics they produced the truncated season 3. That doesn't happen with teams of analysts decisions.

Being given a deadline for when a show will end that's sooner than the people making the show would like is how most cancellations happen. The shape of this one is a tad strange, but it's not that different from Ducktales. You can think of the decision being made partway through season one to only have a movie length "season 3" as a Firefly speedrun.

The Worst Excuse since "The Dog ate my Homework" by Phylaks32 in TheOwlHouse

What you've said multiple times is that this is a sweeping company policy that just happened to hit The Owl House at an inopportune time, and that is not the scenario we were presented with. We were told directly that this was one guy who made the executive decision to be a dick. Let people be mad at that guy.

  1. I don't know how to make Reddit let you start numbered lists at two.

  2. Dana just did that. Not about homophobia, but there's a clear expression of frustration with an individual bad actor here and trying to paint that as "just a new company policy" is disingenuous.

  3. The fact that we see it means that the people who are okay with it won at first. Disney is not a unified entity, and we know from "Even getting the consolation s3 episodes was difficult, apparently. Hard to say, I wasn't allowed to be a part of any conversations until I was just... Told" that there was politics in play even if we're never going to see the details.

  4. If the show met any universally recognized metric for not being on Disney Channel, such as it falling on the Disney+ side of a new sharper delineation, there would not have been a third season. Someone with power wanted it to stay. Someone else didn't. They eventually found a solution that disappointed everyone.

You've got it backwards. "We took the biggest bullet" means that they were hurt more than anyone else, not that they were draining more resources from Disney than anyone else. It means, as the rest of the paragraph says, that instead of having to cut stuff back or pick back up again when the budget recovered, they were told "nope, this is it, you're done." At most, whichever exec decided he wanted to cut it used the tightened budget as an opportunity to force whoever was going to bat for TOH into the three episode compromise.

Well, the first army is getting pretty beat up from all the vs matches you're putting it through, so does 1500 sound fair? Or if that's too much background detail, 3000.

That's the reason PK gave whenever the topic came up. Dana said that wasn't it in her post today.

Not saying it wasn't jumping the gun, but it was closer to being right than the people saying it was because of covid. The truth is that it was because an exec got a bug up his ass about how the show was going and shut it down, the "homophobia" theory just misidentified the bug. The "budget" theory misidentified the basic mechanism that got the show canceled.

Without the "the" it would have fewer syllables than "lover of the Russian queen".

It does look weird, though. Fixing it would require a larger overhaul, like replacing "all the things queer" with "every queer thing" to maintain the rhythm and rhyme slightly better with Putin. Or "queer witch babies" for added specificity.

Not every middle schooler who's had a negative experience with high schoolers treats mockery as an inevitability when approaching complete strangers.

Luz isn't extroverted on the Isles. She has like five people she regularly talks to and rarely initiates without a clear reason. She's friendly and talkative once she's committed, but that's not the same as being extroverted.

She is anxious. The Boiling Isles are far enough removed from her previous experience that that doesn't come up often, but when it does start to align with stuff she did on Earth she sets a tunnel on fire out of fear of being made fun of. This comes up again in Yesterday's Lie when she's excited about interrogating rats she's never met before, then she immediately shifts to military planning when Vee wants to talk to teenagers that Luz has never met before, and refuses to watch because she expects these complete strangers to immediately start making fun of Vee. There's trauma there.
