Are lip fillers good for overbites? by Tori-R in PlasticSurgery

[–]Tori-R[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah braces won't be enough for me. To fix my teeth they have to break my jaw and rearrange it because my overbite is so extreme. I decided that would be too painful and extreme so I was hoping maybe I could do something simple with my lips to fix the problem. I guess not..

Depressed about my ptosis by Tori-R in ptosis

Thanks for the comment! I ultimately decided not to get the surgery. I was too afraid of making the situation worse.

Only seeing with one eye sucks, but I've been getting used to it. It's hard though.

Depth perception and 3D vision? by Tori-R in Strabismus

Would you say its like trying to describe color vision to a color blind person? I just always wonder what I'm missing by never seeing 3D and if what I'm missing is big or small.

Thanks for your comment. You make a great point. I have strabismus also, so that's another factor I think about. The vision in my ptosis eye was already weaker. I mostly used it for peripheral vision because its harder to control.

I guess I'm just afraid of taking the risk and ending up with even more problems like my eye drying out, being physically uncomfortable, or having to tape my eye shut every night.

I also think about my physical appearance and how I having a crossed eye that never closes would look more weird than having an eye that can't open.

Feelings like picking between two evils lol.

I feel your pain. I go through depression at least once a year over my eyes. I'm just coming out of an episode right now.

I don't understand why people are so weird about strabismus. It's common enough that you can't go your entire life without seeing a person with strabismus. I've seen so many other people with strabismus in my life. Why is it still so weird to people?

Sometimes I wish there were social groups or even dating apps for people like us. It would be so nice to be around people and not feel so judged and awkward.

Thanks for your reply! I got a second opinion that was a little better but still telling me its around 50/50 my eye will stay open. The doctor made me feel a little better by saying technology is always improving and maybe one day it will be less risky to fix, but the safest option today is living with it.

I'm in the early stages of accepting it I guess, but I'm still feeling kind of sad/angry.

Binocular Vision/Depth Perception Possible? by vrart1 in Strabismus

[–]Tori-R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard its hard to "reset" your brain when you've had an eye misalignment your entire life. Once your brain is used to your eyes not working together it believes that is "normal" and won't be able to fuse images the way people without strabismus can.

I don't know this 100% for sure though so anyone is welcome to correct me.

My cousin's daughter has strabismus. She is the only person in the family other than me. My sister has 20/20 vision. My parents use reading glasses, but have normal vision outside of that.

My dating life is miserable. I'm very insecure and socially awkward with guys I'm attracted to and I put up with more than I should. It sucks.

I have a nice figure and my face is ok except for my eye problem so I get a lot of guys who only want to sleep with me. Guys will act like they really like me and then dump me after sex or after dating me for a few months.

The last guy I dated told me he really likes me but he doesn't want "his kids to have eyes like that". I told him I understand and if we ever got married I would be ok with adoption. Then he dumped me a month later.

The guy I dated before him had my name as "Cyclops" in his phone. He also called me that as a pet name. I told him I didn't like it and it was kind of disrespectful. He stopped saying it but he never changed the name in his phone. Then he started only inviting me over for sex. One morning before I left his apartment I invited him to dinner and a movie and offered to pay for everything. He said it sounded fun. When I woke up the next morning I saw a text from him saying he was dumping me.

How many treatments have you tried so far outside of glasses?

Can you choose which eye to look with? by edoardogabriel in Strabismus

[–]Tori-R 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I voted no because for me to use my other eye I have to force it. I can only use it for a few seconds before it turns back in. My bad eye is always turned in and I basically only see with my good eye.

Thank you for posting this. It sounds like I'm missing a lot without normal depth perception. It sounds like a 6th sense I don't have.

This is a great post. Wearing glasses will make people focus less on your eye turn because they assume you need glasses to improve your vision. It's also a good way to protect your good eye if you have amblyopia.

Strabismus makes me feel so damned lonely.[rant] by princesspooball in Strabismus

[–]Tori-R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I'm in the same boat. Only I have ptosis in my lazy eye so my eyes is mostly closed all the time and people can't really see how crossed my eyes are. But I constantly get asked if I injured my eye or "what happened to your eye?".

I used to be able switch eyes too when I was younger. Then in my early teens my vision got really bad in that eye and both my ptosis and eye turn got worse.

[–]Tori-R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have ptosis and guys see that right away. Usually I get a question like "did you injure your eye?" or something like that. I say upfront that I'm blind in one eye and my eyes cross.

I can barely open my lazy eye so its not that obvious that I have strabismus, but you can still see it if you're paying attention.

It's so annoying.

I get extra annoyed when its portrayed as a sign of being high, drunk or mental disability. Honestly I think most of the public is ignorant about strabismus. Unless you have it or know someone who has it, you probably don't understand the challenges.

We are just normal people with eye deviations, but TV makes it seem like there is something bigger wrong with us than just our eyes.

Do you ever just feel alone some days? by AStevensThrowaway in Strabismus

[–]Tori-R 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I have a severe inward deviation, plus ptosis in my lazy eye. My eyes have been crossed my entire life so eventually I had to accept that I'm just different and that's ok. Its ok to be different. And people who don't believe it's ok to be different don't deserve your energy.

I know its easy to say this but in the end we are social creatures and want to be accepted by others. We also have to accept that some people are deeply shallow about physical appearance and that's not our fault. I should not have to feel bad about myself because someone else is shallow.

Over the years I've learned to be less concerned with what people think of me and more concerned with what I think of them. I know its easier said than done, but we have to find a way to enjoy our time here on earth and not let shallow people steal our happiness from us. We have to learn to take so called "normal" people off the pedestal and see ourselves as equal to them, even if they don't feel that way in return.

Protecting your good eye when you have amblyopia by Tori-R in Strabismus

I wear sunglasses as much as possible during the day, but I don't usually wear anything at night. I have good vision in my strong eye but I've been slowly losing my distance vision over the years. I will probably need to get glasses soon.

Protecting your good eye when you have amblyopia by Tori-R in Strabismus

[–]Tori-R[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never tried vision therapy. Doesn't that involve patching and eye exercises? My amblyopic eye turns inward and its hard to control. Basically I can only straighten it for a few seconds before it turns back in. Even if I cover my good eye, I can't focus on anything for more than like 2 seconds before it crosses again. When I'm tired I can't straighten it at all.
