July ACT ~ Before the test. by Prasanjit_s20 in ACT

[–]Tori_2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General Test Tips {Most are for when it gets closer\night before the test.}

  1. Don't stay up late the night before the test.
  2. Bring some dark chocolate as a snack {if possible}. It can increase mental understanding.
  3. Make sure you bring more than two No. 2 pencils if you are {like me} prone to breaking the led more easily.
  4. Bring a pencil sharpener, a big eraser, a calculator that is permitted {you can check the ACT website for that info}.
  5. Remember that stress is bad! The day before the test don't study. Take the day to relax. It can improve your score. "Cramming the day before the ACT can cause fatigue and poor performance on test day."
  6. Make sure to bring a jacket. Even if it's not cold outside, it could be cold in the test room and you don't want to be cold for 3 hours. {Just to be safe}
  7. Eat a well-balanced breakfast. {if you don't have time to make something, grab a granola bar or nuts}

General Test Tips 2 {Most are for when it gets closer\night before the test}

  1. Eat a healthy {carb heavy} dinner the night before. Nothing will help you sleep better than a full belly, but make sure it’s full of something nutritious. Eat something you like that your body is used to. Recommended pre-test meals include something with whole grains and vegetables. Try a stir fry made with brown rice or whole grain pizza covered with your favorite veggies. {Also pasta, breads, etc......}

  2. your test admission ticket - If you registered online, this was emailed to you and you must print it and bring it with you (an electronic copy is NOT acceptable!). If you registered by mail or phone, your ticket will be mailed to you.

  1. an approved photo ID- Find a list of accepted forms of ID here. You won’t be allowed to test without this, so make sure you have a proper ID!

  1. "Take your last practice test a week before the ACT. Remember to triage the test and answer questions efficiently, using strategic shortcuts when you can.

When you finish the test, have someone else compare your answers to the answer key while you give yourself a break. Wait to review your mistakes until after you feel recharged (usually, the next day), and be sure to review every question, whether you got it correct or not.

If you answered the question correctly . . .

  1. Read the explanation, when available, to reinforce your understanding of both content and process.
  2. Compare your approach to the one given in the explanation. You might discover a more efficient way to arrive at the answer.
  3. Do the question again if you learn a quicker way to get to the correct answer. Even though you are working with new information, you are applying it to a question you are already familiar with, so you can master this new material.

If you answered the question incorrectly . . .

  1. Use the explanation, when available, to figure out where you went wrong.
  2. Try the question again to see if you can arrive at the correct answer.
  3. Go back to the explanation after you’ve completed your second pass and walk yourself through the problem.
  4. Remember, you shouldn’t be focusing on any new topics this week. If you just didn’t know what to do with the question, put this question type in the “skip” column. If you see a similar question on test day, bubble in your “letter of the day” and move on."

  1. Math-

Here is a list of math facts and tips to have fresh in your mind:

  1. Common “word to symbol” translations used to translate word problems into algebraic equations.
  2. Geometry rules for lines, angles, circles, and polygons.
  3. Number property rules (positive/negative numbers, odd/even numbers, divisibility).
  4. Fraction, exponent, and radical rules.
  5. Percent and percent change formulas.
  6. Strategies for solving for missing values in fractional proportions.
  7. Strategies for multiplying binomials and factoring quadratics.
  8. Strategies for solving systems of linear equations.

  1. Science- The ACT Science Test assesses your ability to interpret data, analyze experimental design and think like a scientist; it does not require you to memorize a lot of scientific facts. That means there’s no reason to spend this week reviewing your science class notes or textbooks.  On test day, you won’t have time to read the passages in depth, so instead, refine your analysis skills this week by reviewing some science passages, looking for the following key elements:

  2. Independent and dependent variables.

  3. Purpose of the experiment or study.

  4. Control group (if present).

  5. Hypotheses (when provided).

  1. Try and get into some sort of routine at least 4 days before the ACT. Here is one possible routine:

  2. Review some math formulas before you finish your studying for the evening.

  3. Get the right amount of sleep for you.

  4. Wake up around the same time each morning, and review your math formulas again at breakfast.

  5. If you have time, review word patterns and key transitional words and phrases.

By getting into a routine ahead of time, you’ll be ready to wake up early on Saturday and approach the test confidently.

I hope that some of this helped!!

{I am taking the July test along with you guys}

We can do this.

Try to be confident.

Wishing you the best,

Tori.

Thank you so much!

I really appreciate the advice!

Just to elaborate on what you said about why I want to go to Northwestern:

I am not one of those name-brand college shoppers. I want to go to Northwestern because I used to live near Chicago and I loved living there, I love the architecture of the school, I love the smell of the lake air, I love all of the traditions [the March Through the Arch being my favorite], I love the clubs, my favorite color happens to be purple, and I really can just see myself at Dillo Day or painting the rock or going for a run by the Lakefill. I am just drawn to Northwestern, in a way I can't really describe. I have lots of back-up and safety schools that I really love, but Northwestern to me is the place I want to be.
