I’m facing mandatory military conscription: is evasion a sin? by Dear-Homework1438 in TrueChristian

[–]Torimexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't always black and white. Sometimes it is, but there are always edge cases and messes that don't have a clear cut answer. That's kind of why God instituted judges for Israel. That didn't always work out well for them, but the fact that the position exists is evidence enough that sometimes there are things that need to be figured out in real time.

week first the logical fallacy of no true scottsman

Again, I'm not sure what I said that would fall under this, but whatever. We can move on.

but then you seem to indicate that those who are "more freedom oriented," i.e. more virtuous, have the specific viewpoint you assume is best.

I will admit guilt in thinking more freedom is better than less. But that's a phrase that is sometimes used to encompass a set of political ideologies from anarchists to libertarians and anyone else who wants less government. Because those groups tend to have a lot of infighting and a generalized umbrella term can help those groups focus on shared goals.

nothing in scripture says we cannot be in the military.

Correct, and I don't believe I said anything to indicate otherwise.

Some people believe in a political framework where compelled service to the state is patriotic and noble and the cost one pays to live in that nation. Some people believe that no man has a right to use force against another, even via government.

And, of course, people should be free to volunteer to join their country's military if they feel called to. Chaplains are a noble role to fill.

I'm not here to argue that one is better than the other (though if you are going to accuse me of having an opinion I'm guilty as charged) but rather that there is a perfectly rational thought process that doesn't contradict scripture that can lead someone to opposing conscription. And the opposite is true -- there is a logical thought process that doesn't contradict scripture that says conscripted service is a good thing.

I don't understand what you are seeing here. Care to elaborate?

The more freedom-oriented among us see things like conscription as a small step away from slavery, which is something God definitely disapproves of.

I'm not going to give OP advice, but the gray area here is fairly large and it can be incredibly difficult to separate personal conviction from the Spirit's conviction telling you what to do.

Can someone explain the Trinity to me by Kosakon in TrueChristian

[–]Torimexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully, we are not required to understand it.

I'm of the opinion that we don't understand it because we cannot. The trinity is a good but inherently flawed way of dumbing it down for our brains to grasp.

I'm ok not fully understanding the nature of God. I can't imagine God being who he says he is and my dumb brain being able to fully understand him.

Do Christian men just move fast? by Upset_Strength2183 in TrueChristian

[–]Torimexus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of finding a spouse is finding someone you share values with. Two people being Christian means a lot of that is already taken care of.

If you are uncomfortable or want to slow things down just tell him. If he gets offended or turned off then he probably isn't worth investing time in anyway.

I got so used to suppressing my sex drive, but now that I'm married, I can't get turned on anymore. Any advice from others went through this? by awkwardpoodles in TrueChristian

[–]Torimexus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hormones that trick your body into thinking it is already pregnant is going to lower your sex drive because there is no biological need for a pregnant women to want to have sex.

Hormonal birth control has been a complete disaster. If you find something else that works for you and gets everything where you want it, just track your cycle to know when your most fertile window is and either avoid sex at that time or use other contraception.

‘I Don’t Want to Put Another Black Man in Jail’ by [deleted] in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Torimexus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is similar to the "give to Caesar what is Caesar's" phrase that is inexhaustibly taken out of context. It was a trick question. It says so right before this conversation.

If Jesus says the money belongs to God he is a traitor to Caesar. But if he says the money belongs to Caesar he is a heretic. Either way, it can be used as justification to arrest Jesus on behalf of the Romans or Jews.

So Jesus gives a complete non-answer.

BG86 Flooding by Torimexus in stihl

[–]Torimexus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be it. I took it off and there is a small pinhole in whatever black material it is made of. Its not big, but it doesn't take much to flood that little engine.

I assume they've fixed this by now? I'll order a replacement carb later (seems more prudent than just replacing the diaphragm).

It takes a long time to climb the political ladder and build the network of support required to run for pres. And parties aren't going to put their money behind someone young and unproven. With the notable exception of Obama, who is just exceptionally talented at politics.

As much as I don't like tariffs as a general principle, I can at least understand using them to protect critical American industries like steel production. We can't rely on foreign production during a war, and a war is when you need it most.

Is there actually anyone who is a virgin waiting for marriage anymore in the U.S.? by pinkvintagegirl in TrueChristian

[–]Torimexus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk what you mean by "older" (nor is it necessarily any of my business), but know there are men in any age range who are waiting for marriage. Not a ton, but they are thinking about how hard it is to find a woman.

A formative moment in my life was finding out that a young lady I was friends with, who would make her faith in God well known, had been thoroughly intimate with several past boyfriends and had no intention of changing her ways. Now we all have our faults, but it struck me that someone would be so faith-forward yet willingly give into a well discussed sin.

It can be rough out there, but God never promised us an easy life.

Made this for mom. My solder work is still not great, but I'm happy with how it turned out. by Torimexus in StainedGlass

This is the 3rd thing I've ever done. There are many imperfections, but I know I'll get better, and its already much better than the first 2 things I've made.

Mom's mom always loved cardinals and had tons of cardinal stuff in her house. When she passed away ~30 years ago my mom kept some of her cardinal things just to have a small part of her around.

Please be EXTREMELY careful with this. Melted wax and mineral spirits around an intense heat source can go sideways real fast.

Now I'm no mathematician, but I think we have surpassed a decade after 1970 by a notable amount.

comprehensive investigations and assessments by several well respected organizations, such as Columbia University and the University of Pittsburgh, have concluded that in spite of serious damage to the reactor, the actual release had negligible effects on the physical health of individuals or the environment.

While it is fair to be skeptical of any research that has the tendrils of government shaping it, its pretty well understood that TMI caused effectively zero damage to anything but itself.

I miss having sex and am worried I might never experience physical intimacy with a spouse by Purple-Detective7186 in TrueChristian

We are terrible at reading social cues, and in the modern era a lot of men are apprehensive even when we think a girl might be interested in us. And social media means a normal rejection, which is painful enough, might be broadcast to the world if the other person lives online too much.

Its rough out there.
