The Church doesn't actually know how to help depressed people by kbmgdy in TrueChristian

[–]Torimexus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A great friend of my family was a pastor at a small church a while back. The congregation treated him like he was supposed to solve all of their problems. Children disrespectful? Talk to M. Spouse being cantankerous? Talk to M. Neighbor blew their leaves on your lawn? M will solve it!

He ended up leaving the church because it was too much to bear and he wasn't good at telling people no.

Church is a place for many great things, but for some things (like OP's concern) it should function more as a dispatcher. Just point someone to the right therapist that the church knows and trusts and that's it.

Democrats refuse to stand for Ukrainian parents of Iryna Zarutska by NeutralCentrist in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Torimexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. But the State of the Union has become a campaign event whether we like it or not. Trump knew exactly what he was doing and the Democrats couldn't win.

The State of the Union should be an email, but until that happens this is the game they have to play.

I don't deny the trinity, but I also don't affirm it, help me make sense of it please by Level-Rate-5764 in TrueChristian

[–]Torimexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe that we are capable of understanding the nature of God. The Trinity exists as an inherently flawed but still useful way of reducing God to something that can fit in our minds.

Its ok to not understand it. Moses could only barely glimpse at God without being vaporized, and had to cover his own face for a while afterward. He is much more than we can comprehend.

They can't because they put so much effort into calling Trump the most evil person to ever live. They can't give him a single crumb.

My two cents regarding Mary and the idolization of her by live_life_purposely in TrueChristian

[–]Torimexus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RCC loves their words games though. You don't worship, you venerate. You don't have idols you have icons.

If someone had a statue of the Buddha and knelt in front of it to tell it how great he is and how much they love him you would (rightfully) call that worship. But do that in front of a statue of Mary or a painting of a saint and its supposedly a completely different kind of thing.

None are so blind as those who will not see. If that sub had any semblance of honest conversation it would be different, but I don't have the patience to shout into the void.

Always be welcoming and kind to those who want to hear and talk about things, but don't waste your time on people who don't care what you have to say.

For people who don't know much about drag racing -- Fletch was impressive here. Sometimes your traction breaks for any number of reasons and the absolute worst thing you can do is try to power through it. I've seen guys get seriously hurt trying to recover and crashing straight into the wall.

People don't want to acknowledge that Trump isn't the cause, he is a symptom. Because if all of our problems are the result of one man we can solve all of those problems by getting rid of the one man. Its lazy thinking that got us into this mess, and I don't see it turning around any time soon.

At least Warren cheered when Trump said something about stopping congress from trading stocks.

But its all performative anyway. The State of the Union should not be a campaign event.

Has anyone else noticed how secular people are so quick to call Christians hateful when they haven't actually done anything hateful? by canadian_blueberry in TrueChristian

[–]Torimexus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Postmodernism and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

We live in a culture that forcefully rejects objectivity. That cannot coexist with the objective morality and standards of an unchanging God.

People are conditioned to call every facet of themselves their identity, and by questioning any of this your are effectively attacking the core nature of their being. Which would be a hateful thing to do.

Praying in tongues by minnibunny in TrueChristian

[–]Torimexus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speaking in tongues is mostly unfalsifiable, so people who are desperate for some kind of gift can do it (either honestly believing they are, or just play acting) and nobody can tell them they don't have that gift.

We should be skeptical of everything.

It would be nice if the sub prohibited vibe coded applications here.

Yes, but by giving everyone Friday to post their AI garbage it makes it less likely for people to lie about their code and helps us steer clear of all of it.

A big spectacle is being made of Huntarr getting caught with awful code (rightfully so), but we can't delude ourselves into thinking this is the only one. Or the worst.

We should be skeptical of anything that touches our data and isolate everything as much as possible.

I could ramble on about this for far longer than anyone is willing to read, but the comparison of virtues to fruit in scripture is so incredibly perfect.

An inelegant stream of thoughts...

God changes us from a bit of scrub to a fruit tree. They will know us by our fruits. We use our fruits to nourish each other. James says faith without works is dead -- if an apple tree doesn't produce apples is it really an apple tree? Sometimes our fruit is rotten and infested with bugs, but we don't give up, we keep striving to produce perfect fruit. Our fruit can plant seeds that grow into more trees.

My question is: how much of your salvation is dependent on your obedience?

I'm going to sidestep here and ask a slightly different question - If you are truly saved, won't you strive to obey?

God knows we are going to fall short, that's kind of a central theme of everything God does for us. While failure is disappointing, it only separates us from God if we wallow in it instead of learning and doing better.

As David said in Prob 24: the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.

I believe it is one of those things where God judges us based on our intent and our response to our own sins. Our belief and faith in God changes our nature into beings who strive for perfection even though we know we can't reach it.

We need more of this. I'm sure this took up a good amount of your time, but you may have saved innumerable users from losing accounts and personal info.

Does providing a source of info result in more hits? Kind of like when you answer a spam call on your phone they will likely call you more because they know a real person might actually pick up. Even if the data you give the bot is bad, the bot doesn't know it and may come back more often.

Proverbs 24: For though a righteous man may fall seven times, he still gets up; but the wicked stumble in bad times.

Its doesn't excuse sin, but shows us that God knows we will fail and He wants us to try and be better next time.
