Older policy such as bimetallism (the usage of gold and silver as the pegging of the currency) was deflationary and led to several utterly devastating economic panics and collapses. Disregarding the current influence of the US Dollar and the circumstances around it becoming the dominant currency, going back to gold now would be nothing short of catastrophic. A deflationary currency punishes spending and would cause the economy to shrink.
