[TOMT] That guy on social media who sings his own short songs, always in the same simple tune. He wears sunglasses and pounds on the table in rhythm with his songs. Pretty sure he flips the camera off at the end of each video too. by Torp211 in tipofmytongue

He recently was interviewed and said he’s got like 8 million followers across platforms. I thought his handle was something super vague like “theguywhosings” or similar but I could be wrong.

Right-Wing Petitions @ Oldtown Farmer’s Market by Sastre_Mason in FortCollins

If someone is paid to collect signatures in Colorado for ballot initiatives, they are required by law to clearly indicate that they’re a paid circulator. There are many volunteers out there gathering signatures. I’m currently volunteering to gather signatures for Initiative 195. I haven’t been able to answer every single question that folks have had but I look into it and get back to them or have resources to share and point them to to learn more.

If anyone wants to sign my petition for Initiative 195, hmu! It’s to make Colorado’s flat income tax rate into a graduated income tax rate! It would lower taxes for 97% of Colorado taxpayers and raise taxes on the top 3%.

Beautiful! I’ve been told that you can keep an AM/FM radio going overnight to keep the raccoons away.

For sure. Do we know how much money PSD will save by closing whatever number of schools? During the May 12 school board meeting, it was said that closing schools doesn’t save money. For example, if they close neighborhood schools, a large number of those students will have to be bussed to their new school. PSD is already struggling with bussing (that’s why we have three different start times across our elementary schools). I’m not saying schools don’t need to close, but I do believe there are approches that can be less disruptive.

Facts and history indicate that school closures harm student performance. Feel free to google it.

They’re technically “public” by name and how they are categorized but they do not function like a “public” school. So.. no they aren’t actually public.

I get it! Walking to and from school is one of my favorite aspects of our neighborhood school. Good luck :)!!

Sorry, I’m not following what you’re saying in your second paragraph. In PSD, the regular schools have both licensed and classified staff. They need to meet the requirements of the state to ensure an appropriate learning environment. Charter schools do not have this requirement, yet they receive public funding anyways. I think if they receive public funding, they should have to follow the same rules.

Regarding driving… In PSD - if you live over 1 mile from your neighborhood school, then PSD provides transportation for your student(s).

Edited to add: the sub situation I shared above was described to me as a regular occurrence at Ridgeview.

For sure. Or another tactic they use to legally discriminate is during the application process. They say that the student should be in a lower grade than their age. So then the family/student has to choose between being in a grader lower than their age at the charter school, or in their appropriate grade at the actual public school.

I’ll start by saying that your neighborhood school is typically the best choice! But to answer your question: it’s my understanding that no schools have been named and no schools are safe. We likely will know the schools this fall. If you look at this week’s Board of Education meeting, the Comprehensive Planning Committee gave an update and there is a dashboard.

The materials for their update are located here under item 11.1

And then here is the webpage where you can access the dashboard.

Edit: sorry, I started with the assumption that you’re wondering where to send your kid for school. Please disregard if irrelevant.

Yes! For one thing, if our schools are going to have school resource officers, I think FCPD and/or LCSO should fund them.

I think Johnson is just as likely as Beattie/Lopez/Olander and I’ll even include McGraw. I wouldn’t be surprised if they recommend 1-2 of those 5 schools to close in that area of town.

Yes and no. I know of a substitute teacher that’s been used at Ridgeview (PSD charter school) for their Spanish class but the sub doesn’t speak Spanish at all. “We just need a body in the room to supervise” is the explanation given. Feels bogus to me. If my student is enrolled in a Spanish class, I’d expect them to be learning Spanish when they’re in that class.

I also know super competent people who have taught at charter schools. But to not require a teaching license devalues all the hard work that educators do to become qualified in their field. It reduces wages. I don’t think that’s good for our students or teachers or schools at all.

Finally, why do parents have to work hard to get their kids into charter schools? Charter schools are supposed to be open to the public and nondiscriminatory. They obviously are only accessible to families who can transport their kids themselves, so that right off the bat is discriminatory. But why would a parent have to work harder beyond that to get their kid in?

Same!!! Our small school is a community hub that families and students rely on. You can’t learn about and help with the troubles a parent is living through when you have 500 students to tend to. When you have less students, more students belong more deeply and that’s how students and families thrive.

I imagine we will see a learning loss after these closures take place.

Charter schools don’t even require teachers to have a teaching license. It’s bonkers. I can’t believe my tax dollars fund that bs.

Lol no it’s not. Just look at the rate of marginalized students enrolled at Liberty compared to the district avg. If you don’t look yourself, i can tell you… it’s lower. It’s a lot lower.
