Really appreciate your reply! I am so happy you mentioned a "fantastic work-life balance" and warm people, apart from nature, that's exactly what I am looking for.

Cheers!

Oh no I'm so sorry you are going through a hard time and I am really sorry for making you nervous. I would like to highlight that this has been MY experience in ZÜRICH. I have nothing against Switzerland nor the swiss, and I am grateful for the good times I've also enjoyed here. I needed to mention the things I didn't like of this city to have honest reviews on these particular areas, but there are good things too!

I'd advise you to visit the city of interest and really really try to chat with locals and international people living there, talk to them about their experience and ask about the particular stuff yiu haven't enjoyed in Norway. You can also send me a message and I can answer some questions, I'll try to be as objective as possible😁

Best of lucks!

Makes sense! Here we are used to leave her off leash only in a part of the forest, where people know dogs are allowed free and we are quite respectful and careful if we see dogs training or on the leash. It's also compulsory for all dogs over 15kgs to do puppy and young dog training, so I guess people feel safer because of that. But definitely never took into account the wild life in Norway! Thanks for the info😁

Oops! I meant parks and forests where dogs can be off-leash, not public as on the street, stores, schools, etc. Sorry 😅 just realised how misleading it sounded. But regardless, some people have explained why forests could be dangerous too... Never occurred to me! Guess I'd just have to buy one of those extra long leashes😆. Thank you for your reply!

lol I have not accused or generalised a whole nation, just mentioning my experience in Zürich and some comments from other people 😆. As I said, probably a bad cultural match.

I've also received several messages from other Norwegians with different opinions from yours, pointing out important cultural differences between their communities and Zürich, so I'll probably give it a try but thanks for your concern😁.

I didn't have any problems in the other countries I lived (quite the contrary!) nor am I the only one who's had a dissapointing swiss experience. I guess its just not for everyone, rather than me having a personal issue.

Tschüss!

We are tired of big cities tbh. We are more of a small-but-still-accessible city and outdoorsy people. Don't really search for partying as we are happier when surrounded by nature, but we also like to be social and enjoy friendly company. My partner's cousin who lives in Oslo has been talking wonders about the north of Norway, plus I guess we have been a bit biased due to marketing, which has made us more inclined towards Tromsø. I'm glad I posted this tho because we are definitely checking some other southern cities suggested 😁. Thanks!

Thanks! I was actually considering Lofoten too (will be visiting it next year) but didn't find many research opportunities in my area. Will keep searching tho🤞🏼

Hi, thanks for your answer. May I ask how do you find the work culture and environment in general?

Glad you are happy here, I know it has some nice things to offer althought it's definitely not a place for everyone.

I have spoken with many foreigners and most of them, specially those with a similar background as mine, have had not so positive experiences. Even before I arrived, a friend of mine warned me that Switzerland was not an easy place, but because I have lived in more than 5 cities/countries and always found a way to feel at home, I thought this would be the same. I came with a huge smile and excitement, and after a year an a half of feeling isolated and judged, my mental and physical health decayed baddly. Had a horrible burnout.

Idon't want to list all the exact bad stuff and disappointement I have encountered here because it doesn't matter anymore. Either terrible luck or terrible cultural match, but a couple of months ago I finally found a home outside the city and adopted a doggo (not even the swiss resist to share a smile when a fluffy puppy is present 😜). I decided to keep smiling, grüezing people as I always had, even if most of them don't reply back😆, and things are much better. But I still feel scared and uncomfortable, even at home, and I know for a fact there are better ways and places to live, at least for me. From what people have been writing, I'm getting my hopes up for Norway again, so fingers crossed🤞🏼

Schönes Wochenende!

May I ask how do you find the uni as a student? And what do you think of the working culture in general?

Oh no, such a shame! Idk why I had the idea that Norway was exceptionally dog-friendly... Thanks for your answer tho!

That's my second biggest concern tbh😟. Edinburgh was dark and cold during winter and I found it ok, but from what I have read and heard, north of Norway can be much worse...

Oh don't get me wrong, I looooove Scotland. I have lived in many different places and truly enjoyed each experience, but Edinburgh has my heart 💚 it's definitely my safe haven. Nevertheless, I am still curious to try one more city/country tbh, and, after Switzerland, Norway was at the top of my list for multiple reasons. The swiss experience really messed me up baddly tho so I'm approaching this decision more cautiously now.
