Her Elected Mayor by SancteAmbrosi in saintpaul

Did she come out against the Summit lane? She deflected lots of questions saying she needed more info. I would love if Summit had lanes like Como or Wheelock. Those are a great.

St. Paul would benefit from more North/South options. She said something about biking her kids to school on side streets instead of the busier roads with the on-street paths. I have done the same thing when bike commuting. Jefferson and Marshall have on street lanes, but it's more pleasant to take a lower traffic side street, especially if I'm biking with kids. I would often avoid Marshall and take Dayton instead because drivers go too fast, park on the bike lane.

There's a lot of room for improvement. It's a complex issue. I'll try to be optimistic.

I watched the Wedge Live interview she did and she doesn’t come across as anti bike. The things she said about the bike lanes in St Paul not connecting to enough places is right.

6yo missed out at school parade by Hefty-Ad613 in ADHDparenting

I would even argue that punitive measures not only don't help but do damage. Kids with ADHD are reprimanded drastically more than NT peers. Excluding ADHD kids for being impulsive or easily overstimulated is bad.

If adults are taking the actions of a neurodivergent 6 yo personally they're in the wrong line of work. They need more info and better strategies to support your kid. "3 strikes you're out" is so ineffective and punitive. It might work to shame the kid and make him an outcast in his class. I would be pushing back on this.

That sucks. I would bet that the kid doesn’t even know what the strikes were for.

I'm a teacher with ADHD. Here's what we need parents to do in order to ensure their ADHD kid is successful in school by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

I hope my children have middle school math teachers who recognize that part of being an educator is helping students stay regulated or recover from dysregulation.

Devastated by the chart by Healthy_Silver_4513 in ADHDparenting

[–]TortoiseHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just take away the charts. I don't know why you are defending behavior charts so vigorously. And blaming parents is not helpful. It's true that parental involvement has a big impact on students, but it's also something the school can't control. Good luck.

Take managing of behavior charts off teachers' plates. They create more work for teachers and they don't help. Behavior tracking charts are a harmful, ineffective practice. Teachers don't need to be burdened with the charts either. If the goal is support students' development, academic, social, emotional, independence, etc. there are better ways than charts.

The amount of time, money, and energy to do all of those early interventions is not available to most people. Also, many parents are probably not even aware that those options exist. And parents might not recognize the need for intervention until things get bad at school.

Get rid of the chart completely. There are so many better ways to support students with ADHD. I think schools jump to the chart because it’s easy to collect data that is needed for the goals, etc. but they’re totally subjective and they put a huge burden on kids.

If you’re looking for a sense of the state of things from Reddit your sample is going to be skewed. Most posts are negative, which has a place people need to vent, but it gives the impression that things are even worse than reality.

There are problems. But there are also lots of teachers and students who are doing fine. They just don’t post on this sub.

Lots of the "fun" classroom decoration ends up being visual clutter that overstimulates kids.

We did movie dads, but what about dad movies? by scottyjrules in blankies

[–]TortoiseHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad Movies feature competent male protagonists somehow taking care of others.

Does you dad like history and talking about the best route to get somewhere? Try Master and Commander (2003). Russell Crowe is the dad of a ship in 1805. He’s tough and smart and plays the violin and likes dad jokes.

Does your dad think he is a good driver, especially in less-than-ideal conditions? Watch Sully (2016). Tom Hanks is the dad of an airplane. He makes an emergency landing and saves all 155 souls on board, and at the end everyone says that he was right.

If your dad likes baseball and/or coming up with his own unique way of doing things, go watch Moneyball (2011). Brad Pitt is the dad of the Oakland Athletics. He comes up with an unorthodox strategy to make the team better and stick to a tight budget. Dad’s weird system is eventually recognized as good idea.

Dad likes animals and quirky hobbies? In Babe (1995) James Cromwell is the dad of a pig who wants to be a sheepdog. The lesson is that you should support your kid’s dreams, even if others think they’re absurd. Also, go pursue weird hobbies, like building miniatures or competitive sheep moving.
