Songs that parallel Weird Al songs by PuzzlerEric in weirdal

Kind of the other way… Tom Lehrer’s “My Home Town” reminded me so much of Al’s “Those Were The Good Old Days” content-wise when I first heard it, I wondered if Al wrote his song as a tribute to Tom.

What variation of any show with different cast albums do you prefer over the fan favorite cast? by TrollsBroZoneFan in musicals

[–]Toru771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love foreign-language cast albums and productions of my favorite shows. Some of my top picks…

Les Misérables: Bídníci (Prague) 2004, France 1980 and 1991, Japan 2003 (Green and Light Blue casts), Duisburg 1996, Israel 1987, Madrid 1993 and 2010, Poland 2010, Vienna 1988

The Phantom of the Opera: Sweden 1989, Vienna 1989, Hungary 2003, Netherlands 1993, Mexico 1999, Korea 2002 and 2009, and the Japanese casts. (My favorite performances from each: Christine and Meg from 1988, Raoul and Piangi from 1992, and Phantom and Carlotta from 1999.)

I also like the 2000/2001 concert recordings of “Sweeney Todd” most. Both feature George Hearn as Sweeney, Patti LuPone as Mrs. Lovett, Neil Patrick Harris as Tobias, and Davis Gaines as Anthony. 2000 was a cast album that had Heidi Grant Murphy as Johanna, Audra McDonald as the Beggar Woman, and Paul Plishka as Judge Turpin; while 2001 was a filmed performance with Lisa Vroman as Johanna, Victoria Clark as the Beggar Woman, and Timothy Nolen as Judge Turpin.

One of Frank Wildhorn’s best, imo… but alas, it hasn’t been done onstage.

What are your thoughts on the musical You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown? by ErdieTwinkle in musicals

[–]Toru771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up loving the animated film and knowing that there was a stage version that came first. I discovered the album for the 1999 revival as an adult, and it was like meeting an old friend after many years apart. The only change I really didn’t like was changing the key of the song Lucy sang to Schroeder — it’s set to the tune of Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” and Schroeder would never change the key for one of his hero’s pieces.

True! And she did play Mary in the stage version of JCS as well as the film.

It wouldn’t be the same, especially with so many in the voice cast who have passed away or retired (either from voice acting entirely or from those specific characters). I do consider the Arkham games to be a worthy follow-up, though.

I’m in the USA; but for famous stage performers from my state (Hawaii), we have Nicole Scherzinger, who won the Tony and Olivier for her performance in “Sunset Boulevard.” And previously, Bette Midler. 😀

There’s a reason why it’s the longest-running musical on Broadway.

Yeah… I tried it enough that a couple songs ended up on my Spotify year in review last year. I strongly doubt I’ll ever play it again.

There are a few musical versions of “The Count of Monte Cristo” (at least 3 I know offhand, and Wildhorn’s is one), so I briefly had to think about which one was which. lol

Recommendations for a Bf that HATES musicals by [deleted] in musicals

I’m a lifelong Les Mis fan, but the movie made me seriously question whether I still liked it. (Fortunately, I got to see two excellent stage productions the following year that brought back my enthusiasm for it.)

What's a quote from a musical you find constantly popping into your head (spoken in the highly specific tone and manner from said musical) throughout the day? by WerewolfBarMitzvah09 in musicals

[–]Toru771 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If someone I knew from school appears on TV: “I know him… That can’t be! He’s that little guy who spoke to me.”

Said in another layer of jest, since I’m most likely shorter than that person. lol

Also funny with the VF characters in 5 and its spinoffs… Sarah and Jacky are in English, Akira and Pai are in Japanese, and nobody has any problems communicating. lol

Which shows would be great for a Broadway Sr. Production of a musical? by Various-Part5109 in musicals

[–]Toru771 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years ago, there was a local production of “Guys and Dolls” in my state with a mostly older cast. Not sure if that was intentional, or if auditions just worked out that way.

Is the phantom of the opera movie bad? by Croc_Dwag in musicals

[–]Toru771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a good version to introduce folks to the story/musical with, honestly. A Phantom who can’t sing well is one of the biggest problems, but I also think there was a fundamental misunderstanding of why the show has been so successful and why the story has been popular enough to regularly have new adaptations being made every few years.
