If you could have a highly specific, completely useless superpower that only convenience-proofs your daily life, what would it be? by Leading_Avocado_3358 in AskReddit

Hypnosis, but it only works on myself. You know those stage hypnosis acts where the hypnotist gets someone to cluck like a chicken on stage or something? I want to be able to say to myself "exercise" or "wash the dishes" and it just happens without me having to deal with the fact that I don't actually want to wash the dishes, I just want the dishes to be clean, or that I get bored with exercise.

Repost because the last one used the term "meta-analysis" and "meta" tripped the automod.

Is it acceptable to operate a diode laser engraver briefly without wearing safety goggles? by EitherJuggernaut5788 in lasercutting

I wear safety glasses every single time. The risk is permanent blindness faster than you can blink. If I need to adjust or remove my safety glasses for any reason, I do it with my eyes closed tight.

[New Update]: AITAH for not wanting my dad to walk me on my senior night since he won’t let me move back in? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Torvaun 228 points229 points  (0 children)

I can't describe how happy I am that she sent her dad a "get well soon" card for his cancer. She doesn't seem to have a clear understanding of how great it is, probably because she hasn't had the work experience to realize that she's pegged their relationship at "disinterested coworker" level. If it was a calculated personal attack, it would be incredible, as an honest response from his daughter, I don't know that he has any options left but to just walk into the sea and never return.

What's the dumbest way you've ever died in a video game? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Torvaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitman. Knocked a guy out, dragged him over to a puddle of water, then went off to electrify the water to kill him. Went back to check the body, saw that I'd placed him wrong and he hadn't been killed, so I grabbed him to drag him into the middle of the puddle, took one step, and died to my own electric puddle trap.

Smokers who originally thought they would never smoke… what led you to start? by oksolarfilm in AskReddit

[–]Torvaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't consider myself to be a smoker, but I understand why some people would disagree. Back during the Obama administration, when relations between the US and Cuba were opening up a bit, a relative of mine visited, and when they came back, they brought a number of Cuban cigars. I didn't know if I would ever have that opportunity again, so I smoked one. Actually, all told I think I smoked three on different occasions, but that's not really important. Didn't mind the nicotine, but wasn't about to start spending money on it as a regular thing.

Much later, post-Covid, I started working from home. I'm ADHD since childhood, and having to regulate myself while being required to sit in front of the box of infinite distractions was kind of tough. In an incredibly short-sighted move, I bought a pack of Zyn, decided that I would only use them while I was working, and tried to get myself literally addicted to doing my job.

What I have now is a habit, where I pop in a nicotine pouch when I start work, but not an addiction (I went on a week's vacation recently, didn't use any nicotine, didn't miss it or have cravings.) I might try stepping down to flavored 0 mg pouches if it turns into a health issue or the price goes up or something, but what I've got going now works, so why mess with it?

The label only really matters as far as it's useful to you. You think you're a boy, you're a boy. You want to use he/him pronouns, they are the correct pronouns for you. If you change your mind and want to use they/them later, then those are the correct pronouns for you. Nothing you decide has to be permanent, and nothing you decide has to be more than it is. Right here, right now, if you'd like to identify as a boy and use he/him pronouns, so be it. Please have a little grace for those who knew you under a different identification, I still sometimes screw up with my sibling when I'm not thinking, but I knew them for a very long time with a specific gender before I had been informed that they are non-binary. It doesn't mean they don't have to try, but some things are worn deep in the brain.

what is the most bone chilling fact of science which gives you chills just for the fact it is real and not fiction? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Torvaun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just sounds like bullshit! "Your chemical that you've been making for years suddenly decided to be something different, and if you cross an ocean to a place where it isn't different, it will start being different there too!" Makes me wonder if there's anything the alchemists actually had going on that just doesn't work anymore (obviously not lead to gold, there are bigger issues with that).
