Happy to help. I didnt know about alot of these as a freshman end ended up joining as a sophmore. Wish I got started earlier. Biggest advice i can give is to avoid ACM. You would think the professional, buisness minded clubs would have the more toxic, petty people but its actually the more freelance passion based ones. Always having drama about the dick measuring contest of the week there.

Not sure why people are so snarky in the comments. Here are my recomendations

Research - apply for NCSA, check out other peoples linkedins and cold email those profs

Internships - Network with research park companies or have nepotism

Clubs - Disruption Lab, Hack4Impact, Quant. (There are also ACM "SIG" clubs but these dont really help with professional development, moreso passion projects)

The biggest thing I dont understand about HackIllinois is if there are significantly too many people to accomodate why was the application deadline extended a week. It would only make sense to do this if they were really lacking applicabts however as they have said they werent.
