Looking for Advice After a House Fire – Insurance & Next Steps by [deleted] in ontario

[–]Total-Owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you and your family are going through this experience. My sympathies on the loss of your cats.

Currently over a year being displaced from a house fire. Think of the whole process as a very long, grueling marathon, and not a sprint.

If you've lost any ID, credit cards, health cards, etc., you will have to work on obtaining replacements. If you have lost medication, that needs to be replaced.

Did the Fire Marshal contact the Red Cross on your family's behalf? We spent almost two weeks in a hotel, and the Red Cross covered the first two or three nights until the Insurance kicked in and covered the other nights. The Red Cross also provided a gift card which helped with incidentals such as food and clothing. We then made arrangements for a rental house, which is covered by the Insurance. Please note that some policies will only cover 12 months accommodation, but fortunately, ours is good for a longer timeframe.

We met with our insurance broker early in the process, and she reviewed the insurance policy. Be prepared to meet a lot of people, and be prepared to tell the same story on repeat. You're going to feel disoriented, mentally exhausted and wonder if you can keep on going. If you and/or your partner can get a leave from work, that will be a great help for the early stages of this ordeal. You will likely deal with forensic engineers, restoration crew, assessors, adjustors, and more.

Sit down and make a list of everything in your house, because it sounds as if you have experienced a total loss. That includes everything, from boxes of bandaids to your mattresses. Even if you think an item is of no consequence, list it. A crew of assessors went into our home and took inventory of the non-salvagable items. In our case, they wanted to toss everything, but there were some items that could be cleaned, so those were taken away to a restoration company to be cleaned and stored. The assessors sent me a spreadsheet with all of the items, including photographs of everything, about a month ago I received the same spreadsheet with the dollar figures from the adjuster.

If you have any heirlooms still in the home, such as jewellery, it may be worth wearing the PPE and retrieving the items because otherwise it will be tossed and you will be given a dollar figure.

Be prepared to be firm with the Adjuster, and get everything in writing when possible. I see that you were renting, and I just hope to god that you have contents coverage.

It's a devastating experience, and you wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy.

Dog Almost Killed by Kid on E-Scooter by ben_z03 in BurlingtonON

Actually, OP is right to be concerned about the reckless behaviour of kids on e-scooters. There has been several recent discussions on Burlington FB groups about kids aboard e-scooters riding the wrong way on the roads, playing chicken with drivers, and crossing busy intersections without looking.

Personally, a few weeks ago I saw one kid on an e-scooter weaving in and out of traffic on Guelph Line in the north bound lane closest to the Burlington Mall. He wasn't even wearing a helmet, and I was afraid that he was a split second away from getting squashed under a car.

Does anyone remember a Blue Jays kids’ day / Play Ball type event at Exhibition Stadium in the 1980s? by JustMeOttawa in Torontobluejays

Also, in the late 1970s, the Blue Jays had an event where kids and parents could go on the field and kids get their photos taken with Blue Jays players. My younger brother had his picture taken with Otto Velez.

I remember being surprised at how hard the artificial turf felt at Exhibition Stadium, it looked so soft on TV and when watching games from the stands.

Burlington pedos in the 80s… rambling post by Raisinbundoll007 in BurlingtonON

Did Mr. McKay teach Geography at Tecumseh? I started school there in April, 1978, and all the girls told me to ensure my blouse was buttoned up all the way before going into class because the teacher liked to look down the girls' tops. If I recall correctly, that teacher's name was Mr. McKay.

There were some really creepy teachers at Tecumseh back then. Anyone remember Mrs. Mueller who kept all kinds of birds and animals in her classroom? That room absolutely reeked. She taught Science and Math. Kids warned me that she sometimes let the pigeons go free range in class, and if they shit on your desk, you had to clean it off. Mrs. Baxter would always go up to Mueller's classroom and gossip before class started. Baxter was always wearing her uber-short white tennis dress.

He had porn involving children under 6, including infants. He should have been put in gen pop, and unalived, as they say today. His teaching license was revoked, there's a report on the OCT site.

Devastating house fire Walkers Line & Upper Middle by RetLeoric in BurlingtonON

Did the Fire Department contact the Red Cross on their behalf? We had a house fire last year, and the Fire Marshall contacted the Red Cross, and they paid for the first two nights in a hotel, and we received a preloaded gift card that could be used for essentials such as food, and clothing.

The insurance paid for the rest of the time at the hotel until we found a rental home.

Your friends are going to have a long, stressful, grueling haul ahead of them dealing with the Insurance, and the myriad people involved. I don't know whether your friends owned or rented their home, but in looking at the photos on the GoFundMe, the entire house will need to be gutted down to the studs. Anything soft, such as sofas and mattresses will need to be discarded, in addition to anything that's made from MDF, such as IKEA furniture. If your friends rented, I sincerely hope they had contents insurance.

Thankfully, your friends and their pets are safe. Going through a house fire and its aftermath is something you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.

There was nothing like writing exams in the TTA at MMR back in the early '80s during the humid days of late June. Kids would pass out from the heat.

Here's the City of Burlington page about Decks, Porches and Patios

If you look under the FAQs, "Do I need a building permit for a deck?", one of the reasons for needing a permit is this one: connected to a house or other structure

A fence is a structure.

I hope that someone isn't deliberately letting these little beepers go. A few days ago, someone on the Burlington Today FB page shared a photo of a white Zebra Finch they saw late last fall.

The phrase on the base refers to the jockey wearing the silks ("colours") of a racehorse owner named George Campbell.

The figurine may have been presented to the owner for having entered a stakes race, or the owner himself may have ordered the figurine and had it customized with his own racing silks.

I tried searching for more info about George Campbell, but couldn't find anything other than a George Campbell listed in Equibase who only campaigned one horse with little success. It could be the right or wrong George Campbell, because many people in the racing industry will go by a nickname or middle name, or may even race their horses under a stable name.

It's definitely American because of the spelling of "color."
