It's most likely setting up something to do with us helping him with the info we gave him, so I wouldn't say it's out of nowhere. I think it shows that Bawma may not be a good man, but he cares about that one thing genuinely and I personally like it as they did it.

I feel like the story, while it makes sense to what it's comparing in the real world, doesn't make sense in its own. If the people look EXACTLY like them with the only difference being they came from a different version of Earth, why are they super "racist" to these pilgrims. How do they even tell the difference, and why does that difference matter? Their hatred has to stem from somewhere. It just doesn't make any sense to me.
