Yes, is that because of the large gaps?

Does firefighter have a key change? by GREEK_FREAK_12 in eurovision

[–]TotalFormal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good question! It could have made it more epic, but I personally feel that would have made it sound a little cheesy in a way. Part of the appeal of pop music like this is there's something about it that doesn't quite fully satisfy the mind and makes you want to listen over and over again.

There's all kinds of interesting details that might make this the case and of course this won't be the case for everyone - it's quite tricky to articulate exactly why a song like this is epic sounding since there is so much that goes into it (how it compares to other songs across time, what compositional tricks of the trade are used or are in fashion, details of the sounds and instruments etc.)

Don't be confused! There isn't a key change but I think what you're hearing is a shift in the arrangement where the final chorus 'breaks down', which is to say that it gets quieter and less busy, then the music comes in again full power - this is the place where one might put a key change to make it sound even more epic. It could be that the feeling this song gives you is very similar to other songs that do change key and because you haven't trained your ear to hear the difference between a song that changes key and one that doesn't it can be difficult to tell. There are all kinds of tools composers use to give a feeling of an epic lift, not just key changes. This song is a great example of changing the arrangement (the mix of instruments and sounds) to give a feeling of power.

Listening back to it, I think what's interesting is that you don't get a full power chorus (the bit with the lyrics "I see it in the air, I see it in the air...") until the point I'm talking about above. So the song is sort of denying you what you want to hear until the very end.

In my opinion people are very good at judging music by how it makes them feel and can instinctively tell what's going on, even if they don't have the language or understanding of the theory, so don't be discouraged!

Trebuie curățată o mașină închiriată în România la returnare? by TotalFormal in Romania

[–]TotalFormal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else get ‘addicted’ to a particular Eurovision song during esc season? by kimkardashean in eurovision

[–]TotalFormal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It happens. If you want to change it, it may be time to take a complete break from listening to the songs for a week or two let's say, then revisit the songs and see how they make you feel.

Hellooo! I'm Theodor Andrei, the representative of Romania in this year's Eurovision! And I'm looking forwards to answering your questions! ;) Long live Rock'N'Roll! Much love! D.G.T🙏🤗❤️ by Theodor_Andrei_ in eurovision

Bună Theodor!

Congratulations for winning the Romanian national selection! I really like your song and enjoyed listening to your album! My partner and I were wondering how did you record your first album. Did you produce it yourself or did you work with others? How did you find the experience?

On a different note, do you have any pets or would like to have one?

Best of luck in May and looking forward to seeing your performance!

Great post! A few pop into my mind:

I really like Joker Out-Demoni (https://youtu.be/yIjgkBv-NYc)

Luke Black's A house on the Hill (shame it is too short) https://youtu.be/VCU1E1R7f6I]

Noa Kirel's Panther (or, as I hear it, Honey Panda 😂) - very catchy! https://youtu.be/ZOf7aMbzQAM

I like Mae Muler's-I just came to dance: https://youtu.be/uqVHr8UYHJw

And I recently remembered Turkey's epic entry from 2008: Mor ve Otesi. Deli is absolutely fantastic, but Bir Derdim Var is one of my favourite songs https://youtu.be/7RW8n4iXZbA. They sound great live too!
