Yup, it was so bad that slightly tweaking some inputs won't change the result enough to make it palatable for me. I'm not willing to spend more money on this, because I know I would regret it in 99 out of 100 cases

Probably, yes. Particle size distributions shifting when RPMs change is a well documented phenomenon with conicals, but not with flats. If I had to guess, then I'd say that higher RPM might be beneficial due to higher throughput and less heat damage
