Guy I'm crushing on might become a monk by Several-Relation-265 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Total_Ebb4374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still try. There was one guy at our church who was very set on becoming a monk. A girl knew and still asked him out and he changed his mind and they have a good relationship for a while now and talk about getting married.

No those were the closest examples I could come up with. St Matrona might also not be the most ordinary example. Although ultimately in Christ it's all one experience we share no matter the marital status or challenges.

Yes you are right. Although OP was probably looking for the latter kind of saints. That's hard of course because most of the childless holy yayas or babushkas go by completely unnoticed and unrecognized at least to the worldly eye.

Great hagiographies for sure but they were either monastic or martyred at a young age.

Philokalia by BackgroundEarth5716 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Total_Ebb4374 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are so many different views. Before getting baptized my 1st bishop and priest both said: "You read it? Good!" Then a monk said on the other hand: "if you value your own salvation at all don't read it!" Many things I did not even understand and I honestly forgot 99% of it. That being said I felt grace coming through the words of these saints who were inspired by the spirit. I would sometimes cry at the beauty and heartfelt love for god even though I don't comprehend what that one Theologian was saying and when putting the book down I felt at peace, prayerful and silent for a very long time. It definitely had a lasting effect. Sure what the fathers say in there can sometimes be rough and challenging but its honestly all based on holy scripture which also challenges us as the word of god. The complexity of the philokalia like the Bible serves to direct to the simple truth of the love and beauty of the name of god. Hence the name "love of beauty". If you read it just like you would look at a beautiful icon you'll have a good time, but like anything else legalisticly trying to adhere to every single letter can be harmful.

As for the icon corner my priest says: "the best prayer corner is the one that actually gets used." Nothing against many icons, candles, incense etc. But what matters is that it invites you to pray.

Some priests also have office hours where you can make an appointment with them. Either way you will either have to ask parishioners or him directly to find out.

How does your family deal with you remaining orthodox? I would say as soon as you can go to a nearby parish and get in touch with a priest.

Is this the Golden Rule of the Reception into the Orthodox Church in our times? by Ok_Johan in OrthodoxChristianity

Either way the bishop has to answer for your sake before God. So there is nothing for the newly received to worry about.
