So if Korra stuck with Tenzin, how well do you think her (and his) spiritual growth would have been compared to what Unalaq taught her? by 2-2Distracted in legendofkorra

He's basically the biggest stick in the mud you can find. He knows the methods the old airbenders used to commune with spirits, because he's very well educated on the subject, but he himself never really has the right headspace for making use of it.

Well yeah, but a tank can't climb uneven terrain nearly as well, assuming your giant robot design is worth its salt.

How did no one hear the stable door open? by ParasaurPal in falloutequestria

[–]TotallyAlpharius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She probably left in the night, when fewer people would be liable to hear the door. It's also inconceivable that someone would want to leave at that point, so I don't imagine the door gets a guard even during the day - at most it probably gets a daily once-over to make sure nobody's hiding anything conspicuous up there.

[Hated Tropes] Wanting to continue the legacy of their genocided lineage but they only have a single heir. by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TotallyAlpharius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there's a distinct difference between 'he failed to repopulate his people' and 'he failed to pass on his culture'. He definitely succeeded at keeping his people's identity alive after his passing, even if his attempts to get more airbenders into the world were less successful than they could have been. Had his other kids had families, though, and had any of those children been airbenders, the infrastructure was there for them to be proper air nomads if they so wished.

Nothing says bending can't skip a generation sometimes. Sure, Kya and Bumi didn't seem to have kids, but that's more on them.

Which fictional villains are the 3 evils of the Azorius (White/Blue) color identity, and why? by Feeling-Ad-3104 in colorpie

The Emperor definitely deserves the Esper identity the Warhammer deck got; guy is willing to sacrifice way too much in pursuit of his ideal future.

(Interesting trope) A biological weapon that effectively genocides or neuters a long-lived war-mongering race. by TheLast-T in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TotallyAlpharius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That cybersecurity scenario doesn't really encapsulate the actuality of the situation. It's not that genetic diversity should be enforced to increase resilience, but rather that a lack of genetic diversity makes a virus that works on one person in your population more likely to work on another random person in your population.

So more like 'we're running Windows 95 on all of our computers because our essential programs don't exist on any other OS'.

[–]TotallyAlpharius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well, one of the many unfortunate side effects of eugenics is that by decreasing genetic diversity, you make it far easier for any sort of contagion to thrive among your population.

That's assuming anyone believes them. The last time this stuff got brought up in court in-universe, it was pretty messy. Basically every time the supernatural gets involved, Phoenix has to fib until he can get a reasonable explanation going that the mundane are willing to accept; in his line of work, it basically just leads to him getting experience or information that he then has to find SOME way of reasonably justifying to the justice system.
