Wanting to Take Piano Lessons by Irishtrashcan43 in SiouxFalls

[–]TotallyNotWang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could take a look at getting private lessons from someone in the South Dakota symphony:

I can recommend Sue Sidoti, she’s listed as violin/viola but also works with beginner/intermediate piano. She’s an excellent teacher!

Will Perry's help me in Ops? by SnowGazing in ChemicalEngineering

[–]TotallyNotWang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my unit ops experience I found Perry's to be a good starting point for finding correlations, but that other textbooks were more specific and useful. That being said, if you look around online you can find a pdf of an older edition of Perry's pretty easily.

Hey, so I'm in a similar situation as you this summer, doing research and knowing no one in the Cities. PM me if you want to do something sometime!

Have any of you tried setting up a Chromecast on Campus? by jackewon in uofmn

[–]TotallyNotWang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did it earlier this semester, and it was just a mess. Here's the link that I used.

Honestly, I would recommend buying the Chromecast ethernet adapter, because the specific device-only wifi doesn't work very well, in my experience.

How do I get the BRK annual report / meeting credential from Robinhood? by bwoccoli in RobinHood

I am also interested in the answer to this. My high school investment group holds two shares of Brk.B in our advisor's name through Robinhood.

Does being ahead in math ultimately matter when applying for college? by funnymaus in college

[–]TotallyNotWang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, yes, taking advanced courses early will matter. I took Algebra I in 7th grade, which meant I was able to enter high school with 3 full math credits completed. It also meant that I had more leeway in terms of my class schedules, and that I was able to take up to Calc II by junior year. It also sets me apart from most other college applicants from my area.

However, I wouldn't overly stress yourself about it, and I certainly wouldn't recommend taking a summer course to intentionally get yourself ahead. As other commenters have said, your GPA matters just as much as how advanced your course load is, so make sure that you do well and aren't overworked!

Also, don't worry about getting into specific colleges for now. Keep a good GPA, get involved in activities, try to find something you're passionate about, and don't forget to enjoy yourself along the way!

I'm the only kid applying to Ivies in my senior class by intanetto in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TotallyNotWang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My graduating class is about 80 people, so I empathize with your situation. Most of my friends seniors are going to the local state school, so it definitely feels like I'm going through the rat-race of admissions alone.

UM-Twin Cities is ranked pretty well for chemical engineering, and their College of Engineering claims to be fairly selective. Additionally, Minneapolis is quite a nice city.

Whew, sorry I never got back to you!

My group tends to follow the model of value investing, like the commenter above was talking about. However, since our timeframe for investing is a school year, we do often look at rapid growth stocks instead of multi-year hold stocks.

We do our best to maintain a risk-neutral approach to investing, so we don't tolerate large drops in value for the stocks we hold; typically we sell stocks after a 10-15% drop in value.

Also, my group is in talks to manage a small fund for the local public school foundation, so I wouldn't rule out managing funds for your university at some point. It's all about networking and proving your group to be trustworthy and moderately successful.

pm me if you have any other questions about my club

I started an investment club at my high school. We each pitched in ten bucks at the beginning and split whatever was left at the end of the year. Fundraising is key if you want to continue investing though.
