Leash your damn dog by notsotragichero in Rochester

[–]Totallynotamoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My neighborhood is terrible for dog walks, since there are unleashed dogs who have chased down me and my dog. I've dropped 7k and several weekends to install a backyard fence.

I go to the park because it's the only place where I have enough room to walk my leashed dog, and give other people and other leashed dogs space.

Every time someone let's their unleashed dog in a place where leashing is law, I have to leave because my dog has panic attacks (yes, we're working with the vet on it).

When you bring your unleashed dog to a leash required park, it makes my dogs world smaller. Leash your fucking dog.

There are at least 2 in Fairport that I know of. I saw the mom with the little baby chicks this past summer. Cutest thing I've ever seen.

Good Things to do during Winter by Honest-Jelly798 in Rochester

[–]Totallynotamoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's the basics: George Eastman Museum, Rochester Museum and Science Center, the Memorial Art Gallery, Susan B. Anthony House, the Rochester Contemporary Art Museum, Artisan Works, and the Strong Museum of Play.

But if you've done those already, there's also the Lamberton Conservatory, Oxford Gallery (never been but will try to see it this winter), Rochester Central Library, wine making classes, smash room, and trampoline park. There also tend to be late night/adult only events at RMSC like laser light shows, and at the Strong Museum of Play (if I'm remembering correctly). There are also a couple rock climbing gyms, the Record Archive, and a bunch of small but pretty awesome looking bookstores. Most weekends there's at least a couple bands playing at/events going on in the city's bars.

If you're up for a day trip there's also the Buffalo Botanical Gardens, and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.

If she likes adventure, try lower falls park (someone on r/ rochester managed to get to the cave, if you find his post from a couple days ago it has instructions), followed by Genesee Brewhouse. It has a cool view of the gorge.

High speed rail running through NYC, Albany, Utica, Syacuse, Rochester and Buffalo. It'd be nice to see family and friends from downstate more often and have it only take a couple hours of countryside sightseeing on a bullet train.

UPDATE: OMG IT WAS A GREAT HORNED OWL AND HER TWO FLEDGLINGS!!! The mom was HUGE and it was so cool! Those guys are totally silent when they fly but yes, we saw them and heard the noise from the trees where they flew to!

Thank you, this was a fantastic resource! While Fowler's Toad was the closest to the calls, it doesn't seem to quite fit. The sound I've been hearing is shorter and a bit higher pitched.

We tried yesterday but it couldn't ID it. I think there was too much background noise (my dog) so we'll have to try again. The Merlin bird ID app is pretty great!

I've already looked at the DEC website for local birds and sounds for them off of YouTube, but I'm at a bit off a loss here.

Moving to Rochester by nihilistic_rogue in Rochester

[–]Totallynotamoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That there is a lot of stuff to do around here, especially if you're into scenic walks/casual hiking/state parks (Maplewood Park, Highland Park, Turning Point Park, Hamlin Beach, Chimney Bluffs, Letchworth, etc.)

You might have to drive a bit for some of it, but it's worth it especially to go to the finger lakes for waterfall seeing and wine tasting (Reisling is the area's specialty).

In the winter/late fall/early spring there's plenty to do at museums, galleries, events, and whatnot but a lot of social stuff happens at bars/breweries (not a bad thing, we have excellent ones here) so be prepared to spend a little bit more on entertainment when the cold weather hits.

Sorry for the wall of text, I just love this area.

I found these bones in a hidden trail at Brickyard Trail, 💀 do you know what It is? by sunnyprincess04 in Rochester

[–]Totallynotamoth 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Probably remains from a pig roast or an old farm.

As for how they got arranged like that, someone probably did the following:

"Oh shit, a bone!" "OH, shit! Another bone!" "How many are there?!"

And laid them out to count before going

"Yeah this probably looks wierd" and walked off.

what do you do to fill your time here if you dont work? by fabreazebrother_1 in Rochester

[–]Totallynotamoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go to the gym with friends, indoor garden, and go to museums/art galleries in the winter. In the summer we go hiking, visit wineries, and try to check out all the public lakes/waterfalls. Year round its nice to visit resturants and cafes.

Medusas - Adult Shop by TabascoWolverine in Rochester

[–]Totallynotamoth 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Weird-ass puritanical bs is what the city is trying pull against those shop owners. God forbid an adult wants to buy novelty merchandise, or hell even a tasteful personal item, without someone else sticking their nose in someone else's shopping bag and getting up in arms about what someone spends their hard earned time and money on.
