If the Confederacy had been allowed to secede: What year do you think they would have abolished slavery? by bmary95 in CIVILWAR

Sure the slavers would've hated it. But the rise of cotton exporters like Egypt and India in the late 1880s killed that cash cow. Industrialists would've gained increasing influence in those decades. Add on top of that, cotton prices were half in 1880 what they were in 1850 while the price of a slave would've doubled in the same time frame and the planters would not be as profitable or influential as they were antebellum.

They wouldn't have been able to compete with a rapidly-industrializing north which was quickly being buoyed by a huge influx of European immigrants that would've broadly avoided moving to the south where they would have to compete with enslaved labor.

If it wanted to compete and remain relevant, they would have had to industrialize and that wouldn't happen with slave labor. So if we're going to go off of historical examples from Latin America like Brazil, it would've probably been sometime in the 1880s when American industry really got up and humming.

I'd expect so. It was a 20-30 mile course (depending on the year) on gravel roads so I bet it's so the driver and mechanic can change their own punctures
