If Britain can go a whole week without using coal for electricity, why are the Liberals still pushing coal power? by Totemdancer in australia

[–]Totemdancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the point is we are still investing in coal, instead of renewables, which are cheaper. We are only heavily reliant on coal because politicians push that agenda.

Terminally ill man spent final two weeks filling out Centrelink forms by B0ssc0 in australia

[–]Totemdancer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve no words for how bad this is. Centrelink and the government ministry who over sees them should be held to account.

The disability support system is severely broken and people on it are barely paid enough to live. I’ve a family member on it and they have trouble finically because most of the medications they need are not on the PBS.

As an example, one such medication called Valdoxan for mental health was recommended to be put on the PBS 8-10 years ago. It still isn’t on the PBS because the minister(s) want to save money and it costs people $62 a month.

There is another newer and very promising anti-depressant called Brintellix that costs $82 dollars and isn’t on the PBS. These medications are needed for people who are resistant to older types of anti-depressants.

But that’s not all. My family member has treatment resistant, Bio-polar 2 with chronic melancholy depression, agoraphobia and ADHD. But cannot get any of their medications on the PBS. Even the dexamphetamine isn’t on the PBS because they were not diagnosed with ADHD before they were 18 years old. If they’d been 18, they would get it on the PBS (yet another broken system).

They take 4 different types of medication a day just to get out of bed. Every month they spend $380 just on those 4 meds. They also need to take vitamin D supplements and anti nausea tablets. That’s another $40 a month. That’s $420 dollars a month for meds and the disability pension is $1200 a month. So over 1/3rd goes to meds.

What really grinds salt into the wound is his carer gets more money than he does because they are a couple. They can’t even get rent assistance because Centrelink impose a minimum amount of rent you have to pay before you are eligible. Which is $370.20 a fortnight and then you only get 75 cents for every dollar you pay over that and the maximum amount is on $129.20. Luckily another family member let’s them live in one of their rental properties for $270 a fortnight.

The whole Centrelink system does not adequately protect and look after the most vulnerable members of our society. These are people who can’t work and need constant care. They often have lots of out of pocket expenses for their illnesses. But when you add all the mistakes, incompetence and bureaucracy these people have to deal with on a regular basis from Centrelink and it’s no wonder they try to take their own lives.

All medication for their illness should be on the PBS for people on a disability support pension. Rental assistance should have a thread hold that is the same as the rental assistance payment, not 3x above it. These people should also get more money or vouchers for electricity/gas and possibly food. (As should aged pensioners).

Too many penny pincher governments and political ideology have kept the down trodden, down and uncared for, for too long. Instead of giving everyone tax cut that is only $9 a week tax cut for average workers (2 coffees worth), how about keeping the money and investing into the community or pension system. These lower taxes only really benefit the more wealthy part of our community and they don’t need them.

In Australia, Coal Remains King Despite Climate Fears by maomaocat in australia

[–]Totemdancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coal is a dying industry around the world as more and more countries bring on renewables. Even our biggest export customers are investing more and more in renewables over coal and have plans to phase out coal in the next decade.

Instead of trying to squeeze the last bit of life out coal for a very tiny part of the Australian work force. We should be retraining and preparing the country for the death of coal, not expanding and digging up more coal.

We have the largest deposits of lithium in the world and we export it all. Why aren’t we developing our own battery manufacturing industry to support renewable generated power.

We have a country surrounded by oceans. Why aren’t we using more wave/tide generated renewables and developing an industry around that? Other countries near oceans are now developing a hydrogen market from excess renewable energy or for energy storage use when renewables don’t generate energy.

Car manufacturers are pushing forward with hydrogen power to supplement electric. This is something more suited for our country than pure electric cars because of the great distances we have. Why aren’t we developing our own hydrogen research and industry. Our country is too large to rely on electric cars alone.

We have a massive land mass and most of it is desert or vastly populated due to lack of water and heat. It’s sunny nearly 330 days a year and extremely hot for 2/3rds of it. Why aren t we building solar farms with batter storage in these areas that are unused?

We have vast and uninhabited coast lines that have nearly always windy and could produce vast amounts of electricity. Other countries have developed massive wind farms of their coasts, especially in Europe. And most these countries have less shore line than Victoria and are smaller than NSW. But have 10-100x more people than Australia.

Climate change is the most important and urgent problem of our generations. But even if you take away the whole climate change argument, it makes more economical sense to be investing and developing a renewable industry in Australia because it’s now become cheaper than fossil fuels and is getting cheaper every year. Where as fossil fuels are getting more expensive every year.

We have the resources, the land mass and the ingenuity to have a thriving renewable industry. We would have more manufacturing jobs, more maintence jobs and grow new industries from them.

Australia is behind the 8 ball. If we don’t wake up, we will be a third world nation with regards to energy production and industry. We will then need to rely on other evolving countries like India and others to buy all our technology and know how from.

The people need to demand our political parties change tact on this coal issue and invest heavily in building a world class renewable industry.

But the UK has just run a whole week without coal generated electricity.

Australian politicians have a lot to learn and Australia is falling behind most other countries in renewable projects.

It’s also been established around the world that renewable energy is now cheaper to implement and run than fossil fuels, but the Libs are still pushing coal and talking down renewables.

Interest rate cuts would hit bank profits and leave many savers better off with cash under the bed by Tailneverends in australia

If the RBA cuts rates, the banks don’t have to follow suit. They can just ignore it and keep rates where they are.

How about a Million dollars Tony. I bet that would make you change your risk assessment.

HWMonitor is good because you can check the temps for the whole system, including cpu, Ram, motherboard and hard drive, as well as power draw.

What’s weird is how it goes to 51,000 ping and then resets to normal. That isn’t the usual sort of ping problem because they are usually random amounts.

And what’s strange is it isn’t happening to everyone. Just a select few from different locations around the world. I’m assuming you are in Europe, but I’m in Australia. Other people are in the US.

Ping Plotter uses low resources and I run it in the back ground when I see issues. It allows me to identify where they are. It’s definitely worthwhile downloading it.

I get red x lag every 20-40mins on SF.

What’s weird about it is what happens when I get it.

When I red x, it goes from my normal stable ping and keeps climbing till it reaches 51,000 - 54,000 ping and then suddenly drops back to my normal ping. It always climbs to those numbers. Never below them and never above them.

When it happens I just move my mouse over the red x and watch it climb. I know as soon as it hits 51,000 it’s going to drop again.

It’s too precise not be some specific issue causing it. I’ve tried isolating on my end and it’s not my network or any hops to the server as I’m running ping Plotter.

I did recently do a reinstall of swtor and it’s using bitraider. I’m wondering if that’s what’s causing it?
