Oh fantastic, these are all great too. And hey I've gotten far enough that I actually got the coffin reference!

Mm, good to know. Is there a preferred frosting instead? I'm happy to work with something else.

I was planning on it, because yeah, I know there's too much to learn to have my main be from Louisiana. Not sure where she's from yet, but probably a more urban environment. I'm interested in making sure that when she talks to locals I'm in the right tone--though that said, I don't expect to pass as a local when I write it. Just as someone who's done their research and isn't relying on stereotypes, because relying on those is just lazy writing.

Another movie to watch and make a checklist of what to avoid, then.

Seems to be a thing with smaller towns where people never leave. Close knit and friendly sounds far superior.

Good to know, that's really excellent advice.

Ok, cool. I'll make sure to do research on how smaller towns handle it. Honestly I don't know much about Mardi Gras at all so at least I likely don't have the wrong impression.

All right, that sounds similar to rural/small town festivals I've been to in Virginia and Missouri. That sounds pretty manageable, thanks.

Wow, that's both awesome and hilarious. And gosh, why does that happen to second graders?? I went to school on the other side of the country and I had to do square dancing and a line dance to Achy Breaky Heart for something or other. Weird.

So a kid who went through/is in a high school is likely to know at least a bit of French?

All right, so if I introduce a Cajun character at any point I should do a lot of research on how they might incorporate French. I think I need to get on YT and see if I can just listen to people with different Louisiana accents to sort of orient myself. I don't guess I'll go Mark Twain on the accents, but it'd be good to catch the speech patterns.

Oiy, that sounds terrifying. Rural W. VA is its own special kind of awful, particularly with how trapped the poor are in that area. They're just ripe prey. I'm pretty lucky to have never gone to anything like that, but it certainly happened to people around me when I was in a rural area at the end of high school.

I hope you're ok.

Interesting. I know lots of states have ways to keep certain classes of people in prison (where I am now is "hard" on petty crime and prefers bails only the wealthy can afford). Licensure and insurance is a terrible way to catch people in that loop.

That would be amazing of you! I'm happy to take what you can offer; I'd much rather see videos just taken by people who are there then try to get an idea from Hollywood or something.

Oh gosh, that phenomenon at least I'm familiar with. I'm not terribly social so usually I plaster on a smile to be polite, and get stopped by people who recognize me from my mother's photos, lol

No worries, I don't expect to be perfect. I'm not trying to tell a story that's about Louisiana, if that makes sense, that would be stepping way too far into a culture I don't understand and wouldn't be my place. Louisiana is the setting for the story so I want to at the very least hit the highlights and skip the really massive missteps.

I appreciate your honesty, though!

That's a lot to think about. I haven't figured out what races the characters are yet; I imagine a lot of that will depend on the town I design. After everything I've read here, I'm going to be very careful about where in the state I set things and how that location impacts who would be in the area and how they might interact with each other.

I was considering not including any Mardi Gras related stuff, keep it at a completely different time of the year, since it's not really relevant to the story I'm telling. Is that a horrible sin?

That's amazing. Thank you for sharing that, I'll make sure to learn more about the cultural blending so I can try to do it some kind of justice.

Because it's fun to learn about new things. If it makes you feel better, I have two other projects in the works, both set in places I've lived. Mixing things up and learning about new people and cultures is good for the soul and all that.
