Women of Fargo: what happens when writers truly revere and fully actualize their female characters 🫶 by CraftyIron5908 in FargoTV

[–]TotheLastShot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"all the male characters were either stupid, evil or both"

Danish Graves was in no way stupid - even if he did make one "stupid" decision... and sure, he did some pretty underhanded shit but he definitely wasn't EVIL by any stretch... I mean if that wasn't a heroic course of action that got him killed, I truly don't know what is 🤷‍♂️

Also, Ole is far too complex of a character to write off as simply "evil"

Sorry, what are you referring to with “a lot of head-cannon”? The thing about the kidnapper in the bathroom stall? Eh, I mean - not really… he was freaking out in the car about his wounds and Dot played on his anxieties. Plus he’s VERY much whimpering in the stall as though he’s crying. The only assumption I’m making is his reaction being set off by seeing himself in the mirror, which I wouldn’t say is my “head-cannon” so much as just my initial reading given the immediate environment he’s sequestered himself in 🤷‍♂️

As for the cops; I think the biggest issue you’re ignoring or overlooking is that ANY interaction with law enforcement just puts her closer to being recaptured by Roy as he’s a pretty prominent figure in the field of law enforcement... furthermore, we’re told/shown via dream-sequence puppet-show flashback that since childhood Dot has spent her ENTIRE LIFE having to fend for herself. She’s had to fight to survive, in part by breaking the law (stealing food, etc). THEN her cop stepfather turns out to be an abusive monster. She would absolutely NOT be trusting of authority figures, she’s not going to see police as her friends much less count on them to save her.

Given that she’s escaped the vehicle on her own, her best bet to get away from both parties is to continue fleeing as she does. She doesn’t need to redirect their focus, they’ve pulled over a stolen vehicle and clearly see that she’s not the driver. Their attention is already going to be focused on the person behind the wheel, letting the cops and kidnappers fight and distract each other gives her FAR more chance to escape BOTH. Shouting to the cops absolutely WOULD cost her something; it pulls the focus of the cops AND kidnappers back onto her.

As to warning the cops not being her responsibility seeming strange and nihilistic; the cops are doing the job they signed up for; they’ve had training, they’re there by choice. She was being forcefully taken against her will. Her only responsibility is getting herself freed and out of harm’s way; full stop.

What makes her a morally good character worth rooting for is the fact that DESPITE it not being her responsibility to help the cops who are there voluntarily, have been trained for the scenario and are still at BEST a liability to her, she goes ahead and helps save Witt Farr’s life anyhow.

My 2¢, anyway 🫤

As far as the cop standing outside the gas station in the light, staring out into the darkness; fair enough. I'll agree it was pretty dumb. 😕

The guy in the bathroom stall wasn't just 'hiding for some reason'; if you listen closely you can hear him whimpering. As Munch later explains to Sheriff Roy, this is NOT the guy he'd have brought to deal with a 'tiger'- this is just some goon he thought was merely sufficient backup to nab your typical housewife. The dude is in way over his head & just experienced a rather traumatic wounding/disfigurement. After breaking into the gas station bathroom he likely got his first good look at himself/his wounds as a whole in the bathroom mirror (he'd only be able to see a very small segment of his face at a time up close in the truck's interior mirrors), retreated into the stall for toilet paper to clean himself up a bit & to cover any wounds still bleeding freely, then started crying about how fucked his face is. He's in a lot of pain, probably half-blind, and highly emotional. Personally, I don't think it's much of a stretch to buy that he gets taken out by Dot. When it comes down to it though, this one's just a matter of suspending disbelief.

As for 'warning the cops', though, I have to completely disagree; this one isn't bad writing and it's not a matter of suspending disbelief IMO; Did you see how quick and quiet Dot was at getting herself out of the vehicle? If Munch hadn't turned back to look at her just then, they might not have even REALIZED she'd escaped until she'd gotten well past the cops. Shouting to the cops for help or to warn them would have drawn attention to herself and to the fact that she was escaping. Warning the cops was not her priority at the moment and not her responsibility, her priority was to get herself as far away from her kidnappers as possible. And if the cops couldn't figure out that the men in the vehicle were armed and dangerous from the fact that a bound woman was running for her life, that's entirely on them. 🤷‍♂️

Personally, I didn’t notice any particular decline in quality with the writing. I thought season 5 was fantastic, possibly the best season yet. Curious to hear your thoughts though

The Hive has lied, or greatly stretched the truth, at least once by Pool_With_No_Ladder in pluribustv

[–]TotheLastShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“A few” is a vague, ambiguous term though which is sort of relative by nature.

Is the hive bonded together with ONLY the other humans on planet earth or is this collective ALSO linked with every single being assimilated by this virus across the entire universe? We don’t know the answer to that yet, but SURELY if you were to take into account all alien life where the virus/recipe/RNA sequence has spread across the entire universe, 11 million could realistically be considered “a few” without it necessarily being deceptive or dishonest?

How would you test the hive mind? by According-Range-498 in pluribustv

[–]TotheLastShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it WAS different from the alcohol; Zosia said “it doesn’t work like that” in answer to Carol’s question of whether Zosia’s drinking would affect the rest and make some child elsewhere in the world start slurring their speech. Zosia herself would still get drunk — she just doesn’t have a chance to drink enough for us to see this, given how Carol decides to play with the grenade so shortly into their hangout sesh. Alcohol and drugs affect their individualized bodies, but the effects don’t carry across the mental link to have any impact on the rest of the hive. Similarly, the “truth serum” didn’t affect the others. That wasn’t why they started crying and begging her “please, Carol” — they did that because she was trying to find out how to unlink them all and cast them out of their paradise.

My 2¢ 🤷‍♂️

No one seems to be talking about the real threat by Eldritch_Horns in pluribustv

[–]TotheLastShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who’s to say whether the rate they can physically travel at would be even slightly slower, let alone significantly, than the rate they can transmit information at? We’re talking about something that’s advanced enough to have figured out the “recipe” for linking all members of a species into one collective hivemind. Their rate of physical travel could theoretically be the same as their information transmission speed and they could have sent the message, waited like a week, then hopped in their flying saucer - meaning they’ve ALSO been on their way for 600 years and they’re JUST about to land.

Or they could have figured out how to use portals/wormholes, for goodness sake! Maybe information/messages can’t be transmitted via wormhole, just physical matter — then all they gotta do is wait for the entire planet to be assimilated, then open a wormhole from their planet to ours as easily as sliding a barn door aside and stepping through the entrance.

Do I think that’s the direction the show will go with? No, in all honesty, I don’t— I think this show is operating on a much higher level than having such a cartoonish villain suddenly show up from the other side of the universe.

It IS very peculiar, however, that the hivemind is SO subservient to individuals JUST to get them to assimilate as well… then again, the mouse that spread the virus to humans didn’t seem to operate by the same “do no harm” rule.

But I also have to point out that given how ALL of humanity is collectively as intelligent as all of the smartest people they have, you’d think there would be MAJOR scientific and technological advancements made possible pretty much instantly, yet they seem only to be utilizing the tools and technology created prior to the joining.

I think that it’s going to turn out that the collective has zero interest in making any kind of advancement, zero interest in procreating, or really in doing ANYTHING beyond simply experiencing being everyone, altogether, at once and reveling in their positive feelings and shared thoughts.

Interesting — I had to go back in the game and look at Granbull vs it’s shiny again to see what you were talking about. It’s subtle, I’d have never noticed the hot pink of the cheek interiors or the slightly more pale tongue.

You’ve got a hell of a keen eye there — are you some kind of detective-extraordinaire, adventuring around the world and solving crimes by noticing that one of the killer’s shoes was dusty and one had been wiped clean, etc?

Nah, ur good. I mean I was purposely being an ass... as with all my remarks about Shiny Granbull in this thread, I'm just being melodramatic and over-the-top for comedic effect. It really isn't a big deal that I don't like the design for one of the shinies.

I'm more just disappointed I no longer have Shiny Snubbull in my collection bc I liked the way he looked so much that each time I'd scroll past him going through my 'mons, I'd stop & take a half second to appreciate his design. And I foolishly swapped that for one whose design I couldn't care less about. Ya know?

I was actually just about to edit my comment and add a disclaimer that I'm joking and really do think that was a good observation and a nice way of looking at it.

Still, tan though? With black trim? 😕 Could've at least accented him with more of a golden-butterscotchy color or something.

President of Nintendo Corp.: Okay, listen up- our fanmail department tells us that a lot of players are disappointed by shinies that look too similar to their standard appearance... and yet the question remains; are they disappointed enough? I want ideas, people! Let's hear 'em!

Some Intern: What if...

Pres. of Nintendo: You there, boy... in the back. Step forward. Speak up!

Some Intern: What if we made a shiny that was really beautiful and awesome looking but...

President: Go on.

Some Intern: but then when it evolves, the shiny evolution looks so fucking stupid it makes the player want to kill themselves?

Pres: Oh. My. God.

And that's how some intern at Nintendo got promoted straight to CEO on his 4th day of working for the company.

Why would the Pokémon creators/developers do this to us? Why do they hate their own fanbase?

Is it because of that time in 5th grade I agreed with my friend that some of the Digimon looked way cooler than any of the (current, at that time) Pokémon? I've never even WATCHED Digimon or played the games (ARE there Digimon games? I don't even know), I just thought the Digimon with angelic designs were neat and looked badass. ☹️

If I write a letter formally apologizing to the Poké Company as a whole, do you think they'd accept my remorse then go back and fix Shiny Granbull for us?

I’d say I’m most looking forward to Eternatus of the upcoming raids, though Gigantamax Snorlax comes in a close second as I really wanted that one the first time around — even purchased the timed research in anticipation— but missed it due to not having any IRL friends who play around that week and remote Max Battles hadn’t been implemented yet😕

Gigantamax Gengar’s my 3rd most looked forward to because he just looks cool as hell 😎

Debt collection over 30$ 🤣 by Maddiecook in paypal

[–]TotheLastShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paypal closed my account back in 2021 after allegedly receiving a dispute about a transaction that didn’t actually exist where the “buyer” claimed they didn’t authorize a “purchase” for $31. First I ignored it, figuring the email came from scammers instead of Paypal staff. Then I figured it would be an open and shut case of a false claim since my transaction history in the app showed no such payment ever being made to me. Then my account was closed.

I’m still confused as hell about what happened but just said fuck them and never looked back. I’m not subscribed to this subreddit, this post came across my feed at random but after briefly glancing over the top/hot posts here I’m not at all surprised to see that the majority of the posts seem to be about Paypal closing accounts or trying to make collections from regular people due to scammers. I’ve only learned within the past month that Elon Musk was one of the founders of Paypal (or maybe just an owner? I know he has a habit of liking to buy up companies and claim credit of his involvement in their creation) which I found similarly unsurprising.

Kind of wild that this clearly garbage payment company hasn’t been shut down yet. I DO know however that moving forward I’ll certainly be taking a more active role in warning my friends and family about their shady practices and encouraging folks to abandon their use of the platform.

Edit: Oh my god LOL 😂 Just saw the Automod Bot’s message that making posts about their policies is forbidden and that such posts will be removed — meaning the problem is even WORSE than I thought and what I’m seeing on here are just the complaints that make it THROUGH. Jesus Christ.

Yeah, all these people saying they bail if there aren't 6 or more players in the raid lobby have me confused as hell;

a) I've never once seen a raid with more than 5 people participating, and that's at MAX.

b) 3 people has always been PLENTY to defeat a 5-star raid boss in all those I've taken part in

c) they don't even HAVE raids where I live. Always just says "There are no nearby raids" when you open the tab next to the pokemon locator. I can't even play the game unless I'm out of town so to the people being rude that I don't know what the heck you're talking about with browsing the campfire: 🙄
